HHS volleyball splits road trip

In its final matches of the regular season, the Havre High volleyball looked to build some momentum before the postseason begins this week. Well, it was a mixed bag for the Blue Ponies this past weekend as they lost, 3-2 (6-25, 25-16, 25-17, 12-25, 15-11) to Sidney but then defeated Miles City, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16).

The Ponies started their road trip with a match against Sidney on Friday. The Ponies started the night strong as they jumped out to a 15-6 lead over the Eagles. The Ponies then went on a 10-0 run to win, 25-6, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

But the Eagles responded in a competitive second set. With the set tied, 10-10, the Eagles went on a 13-4 run to take a 23-14 lead. They then closed it out to win, 25-16, to tie the match, 1-1.

After an 8-8 tie to start the third, the Eagles took control to win the third, 25-17, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Looking to stay alive, the Ponies jumped out to a 17-7 lead to start the fourth. The Eagles failed to respond as the Ponies went on to win, 25-12, to tie the match, 2-2, and force a fifth set.

Both teams came out strong to start the fifth as they battled to a 6-6 tie. The Eagles took a slim lead, but Havre again responded to make it a 9-9 stalemate. The Eagles then took control with a 6-2 run to win the set, 15-11, and to win the match, 3-2.

After losing to Sidney, the Ponies looked to respond on the road against Miles City on Saturday night. In the first set, the Ponies raced out to a 12-4 lead. The Cowgirls responded but were never quite able to overcome the deficit as the Ponies won, 25-22, for a 1-0 lead on the night.

After a 9-9 tie to start the second, the Ponies went on a 4-0 run to take the lead. After Miles City responded to cut the deficit to 13-12, the Ponies went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-12 lead. They then held on for the 25-16 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Through most of the third, the Ponies and Cowgirls went back and forth until it was tied, 15-15. Looking to finish it off, the Ponies went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Miles City failed to respond as Havre went on to win, 25-16, for a 3-0 victory in the match.

The Ponies finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-4 and a record of 6-2 in the Northeast A. The HHS volleyball team will begin the postseason with the Eastern A Divisionals in Lockwood starting this Thursday.
