The Havre High football team has fought its battles throughout the year, so a fight against Lewistown to end the regular season should be no surprise. And while it was not always pretty, the Blue Ponies pulled off the 17-14 road win over the Golden Eagles this past Friday.
The Ponies put together a strong drive to start the night. After marching all the way down to the Lewistown one-yard line, Griffin Terry punched it in on a quarterback sneak to give Havre an early 7-0 lead.
But the rest of the first half saw both teams struggle to move the ball and score. Late in the second quarter, the Eagles finally got some momentum as they marched down to the Havre ten-yard line. But the Eagles coughed up the ball and the Ponies picked it up and ran it all the way back for a touchdown. They then made the extra point to make it 14-0.
Later in the half, Jacob Herring intercepted the Lewistown quarterback to give his offense great field position. The Ponies capitalized on the opportunity with a field goal to take a 17-0 lead into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Eagles finally found some momentum in the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth, the Eagles got on the board with a rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-7. After getting the ball back, the Eagles went right down the field and scored to make it a 17-14 game halfway through the fourth.
After forcing a Havre punt, the Eagles had a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing moments of regulation. The drive looked promising as they reached Havre territory. But the drive stalled and the Eagles found themselves in a fourth and 16. Lewistown tried to take the lead with a heave to the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete and the Ponies held on to win.
With the victory, the Ponies finish the regular season with a 7-3 record and a 3-1 record in the Eastern A. The HHS football team will begin the postseason with a game against Lockwood this Saturday.
