Local News - Salmon snagging season started on Fort Peck

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks

Salmon snagging season on Fort Peck Reservoir started Oct. 1, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks fisheries crews will be out on the reservoir collecting salmon for spawning.

FWP fisheries and hatchery staff will begin collecting adult Chinook salmon on Fort Peck Reservoir starting the first week of October. The annual collection effort lasts through much of October, with the goal of collecting as many salmon eggs as possible. Salmon eggs are fertilized and raised in the Fort Peck Hatchery over the winter.

Collection efforts coincide with the salmon snagging season, which began Sunday, Oct. 1, and runs through Nov. 30.

People need to be aware of fishery crews and their electrofishing efforts, as they may be near areas where angling activities are taking place. The salmon tend to congregate in areas where they were initially released, and often can become concentrated. If people have questions concerning the salmon spawning egg-take efforts, they call Headley at 406-526-3471, or email [email protected].
