Havre volleyball picks up wins over the weekend

The Havre High volleyball team has been on a roll this fall and that continued this past weekend. First off, the Blue Ponies defeated Browning, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-22), on the road Thursday night. The Ponies then kept it up Saturday at home when they defeated East Helena, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17).

The Ponies got their week started on the road Thursday night against Browning. Looking to get off to a strong start, the Ponies jumped out to a 20-16 lead in the first set. After Browning scored to cut the deficit to three points, the Ponies went on a 5-0 run to win, 25-17, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Through most of the second set, the Ponies and Indians went back and forth. With the game tied, 7-7, the Ponies got on a roll to build themselves a 19-14 lead. The Indians tried to claw their way back, but Havre held on to win, 25-20, to stretch the lead to 2-0 in the match.

Havre jumped out to a 10-4 lead to start the third set. But the Indians kept with it and were able to cut the deficit to 13-11. The Ponies responded with a run of their own to build an 18-14 lead over the Indians.

Looking to stay alive, Browning went on an 8-4 run to knot things up at 22-22. But the Ponies wrangled away momentum as they ended the set on a 3-0 run to win, 25-22, to win the match.

The Ponies continued to play well against East Helena Saturday at Havre High Gymnasium. After an 11-11 tie to start the first set, the Ponies went on a 14-5 run to win it, 25-16, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was much more competitive as the Ponies and Vigilantes exchanged points. With the game tied, 19-19, the Ponies scored two straight points to take the lead. The Vigilantes continued to keep it close, but Havre won, 25-22, for a 2-0 lead in the match.

After a 5-5 stalemate to start the third set, the Ponies went on a 14-5 run to take a 19-9 lead. The Vigilantes were unable to mount a response as Havre went on to win, 25-17, to finish off the match.

With the wins, the Ponies improved their record to 8-1 this season. The HHS volleyball team will next play Lewistown at HHS Gymnasium Tuesday at 7 p.m.
