Obituary - Cyril 'Cy' Slaby

Tuesday, September 26, 2023, Cyril "Cy" Slaby, loving husband, father, and gentleman statesman, passed away at the amazing age of 102 at the Northern Montana Care Center in Havre, Montana.

A longtime active member of St. Jude's Catholic Church, Cy was an avid fisherman and hunter who appreciated Montana's outdoors and worked tirelessly to protect its waterways and public lands.

His tenacious attitude on display in his baseball days paralleled his time as a Havre city councilman, state legislator, and advocate for education.

Cy served in the signal corps of the US Army during WWII, where he was involved in the early development of radar. He eventually moved to Havre to hire on with the Great Northern Railroad. Soon after, he met and married his wife of 50 years, Lucy, whom he lovingly cared for as her health declined.

Cy is survived by his son and constant companion, Robert "Bob" Slaby; daughter, Seena (Tom) Demmons; two grandchildren, Tony Smith and Lindsey Thompson; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; three siblings; and nearly all of his dear friends, including one of his best buddies, "Fats" Slonaker.

A vigil service has been set for 6:00 p.m. Monday, October 2, 2023, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Havre. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., also at St. Jude. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery with a reception in the church parish center afterward.

Memorial donations in Cy's memory may be made to St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, the North Central Senior Center, or a charity of the donor's choice. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with services and arrangements.
