Homecoming at Havre High School is going to look a bit different this year, with a community celebration instead of their usual assembly, a change necessitated by the school’s recent adoption of a four-day school week.
The coronation ceremony for Homecoming was held this morning in the Havre High School Auditorium, with the king and queen having been crowned and the court having been elected from the student body, all of whom will appear Friday in the parade at 3 p.m.
The parade will be a little earlier than normal this year, but the biggest difference compared to previous years is the replacement of the Homecoming pep assembly with a community Pep Rally and celebration from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Havre High School west parking lot.
Havre High School Activities Director Mark Irvin said that, because Fridays are no longer traditional school days, they’ve had to make this adjustment, but he’s interested to see how it all works out.
“It should be a good time,” Irvin said. “ ... We’re excited about it.”
He said the celebration will feature live music from the school’s band, and the school’s sports teams — those that aren’t playing away from home that day, at least — will be there to meet the community.
The school’s other extracurricular clubs will also have their own booths and events at the event, he said, which will feature activities like face painting and car decorating.
After the celebration will be the homecoming football game against East Helena High School which kicks off at 7 p.m. in Blue Pony Stadium.
The parade will be at 3 p.m. with floats and a shower of candy for the audience.
There will also be a volleyball game a 1 p.m. on Saturday, also a part of Homecoming.
Irvin said this new setup was designed to cause minimum disruption of instructional time, and it will be interesting to see how it goes.
