The Havre High football team is back on the road tonight with a game against the Lockwood Lions. The Blue Ponies are coming off a tough road loss to Miles City, so they will be looking for a win to wrap up the first half of their season.
The Lockwood Lions will be a tough team to beat as they are off to a 3-1 start this season, already matching their win total from last season. The Lions will also be looking to avenge a 36-7 loss to the Ponies last season.
Lockwood's success has been because of their defense, which is only allowing 16.25 points a game. In the Lions' three wins this year, their opponents only average 11.33 points a contest. If the Lions have a weakness, it might be their offense. Through the first four games of the year, the Lions are only averaging 14 points a game.
The Ponies enter the game with a 2-2 record this season. They are also 0-2 on the road, so they will be looking to pick up their first road victory tonight. As the Ponies try to climb above .500 past the halfway point of the season, their best players will need to step up.
Quarterback Ciaran Courtnage will look to lead the offense to success against the tough Lockwood defense. This fall, Courtnage has completed 60.8 percent of his throws for 698 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. He will look to rely on receivers such as Carson Harris, who has 12 catches for 168 yards and two scores.
But if the Havre offense really wants to get rolling, it will need the ground game to get going. Tate Nelson is off to a strong start this season as he has 400 yards and three touchdowns on 5.19 yards per carry.
After tonight, the Ponies will only have four more games in the regular season. Two of those games will be on the road, including one against an always tough Lewistown squad. If the Ponies want to put themselves in good position for a playoff run, a win tonight would go a long way.
The HHS football team will play Lockwood on the road tonight at 7 p.m.
