Letters to the Editor - When will I see tax relief?

Dear Gov. Greg(ory) Gianforte,

I am age 79, close to 80, born in Montana. I voted for you, but I am an independent, mostly leaning highly towards Republicans. In 2019, I did vote for the Ravalli County, Corvallis School, tax levy to purchase the vacant REA property adjacent in Corvallis. Later, my property tax increased 9.26%. When I called, the Montana Revenue said it was the school district’s tax levy for the next three years.

This year, that school tax levy was done, but the district wanted to retain that levy, this time for “programs,” permanently. This time, I did not vote for this levy. The request for a permanent tax failed.

Then, on June 30, your Montana Department of Revenue appraised my property for 27.8%. When I was thinking my taxes would decrease because of Corvallis’ school tax being done, I’m seeing 27.8% +/- 9.3%, a total increase of 37.8%!

Then, on Aug. 1, your letter was received about the $675 rebate. Thank you, but why raise taxes only to rebate them? Your Revenue appraisers must be loco; your people are not talking with your other people; duh! And your rebate is only for two years, and who knows what my taxes will be like in 2025!

Some taxpayers received an income tax refund; I didn’t get anything. I am waiting for property tax assistance program (IRS line 20?) for tax year 2023, and waiting.

Your Aug. 1 letter said “That”s one reason we must make permanent reforms to provide you and other homeowners with significant, long-term property tax relief.” Greg, when? Today, tomorrow or … ?

Regrettably without respect,

James L Thomas

Corvallis
