After a tough loss against Billings Central last week, the Havre High football team looked to rebound on Friday night against the Miles City Cowboys. Well, in the friendly confines of Blue Pony Stadium, the Blue Ponies responded with a 36-18 victory over the visiting Cowboys.
But the night did not start great for the Ponies. Late in the first quarter, the Ponies fumbled the ball and the Cowboys picked it up and ran it back for the score and the 6-0 lead. But the Ponies responded with a touchdown drive to knot things up early in the second quarter.
Later in the half, the Ponies put together another strong drive into Cowboy territory. The Ponies had to settle for a field goal and the 9-6 lead. But on the ensuing kickoff, the Cowboys returned the kickoff all the way for a touchdown to take a 12-6 lead.
The Ponies wasted little time responding as they scored on a 65-yard touchdown pass to take a 16-12 lead into halftime. Then early in the third quarter, the Ponies created some separation on the scoreboard when Griffin Terry connected with Rhett Wertheimer for a score.
The Cowboys fumbled the ball on the ensuing kickoff. The Ponies capitalized on the takeaway with a four-yard touchdown run by Tate Nelson to extend the lead to 29-12. Then in the fourth quarter after another Cowboy fumble, Nelson ran the ball in for another score to put the game out of reach.
With their win, the Ponies now have a 2-1 record a third of the way through the regular season. The HHS football team will look to pick up another win when it faces Glendive on the road this Friday at 7 p.m.
