HHS volleyball rolls through weekend with pair of sweeps

This past weekend, the Havre High volleyball team competed in its first true action of the season. And in their first full matches, the Blue Ponies looked good as they defeated Browning in three sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-10) at home on Friday night and then defeated East Helena in three sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-22) on the road.

In their home opener at Havre High Gymnasium, the Ponies got to work against Browning. After a 9-9 tie to start the first set, the Ponies went on a 12-2 run to take a 21-11 lead. The Indians were unable to respond as Havre went on to win it, 25-13, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set between Havre and Browning was much more competitive. Throughout the second, the Ponies and Indians went back and forth with points and the lead. After they battled to an 18-18 tie, the Ponies scored two straight points to take the lead. The Indians continued to battle, but Havre pulled out the 25-21 victory for the 2-0 lead in the match.

Looking to end the match, the Ponies started the third on a 6-0 run. The Ponies did not let go of momentum as they cruised to a 25-10 victory to win the match in three sets.

The Ponies continued to play well on the road Saturday against East Helena. The Ponies took an early lead in the first set, but the Vigilantes kept it close through most of the set. But with a 17-14 lead, the Ponies grabbed momentum to go on an 8-2 run to win, 25-16, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set started competitively as the Ponies and Vigilantes fought to a 9-9 stalemate. But the Ponies took control thanks to a 10-1 run to race out to a 19-10 lead. East Helena had no response as Havre won, 25-15, for a 2-0 lead.

East Helena tried to extend the match as it played a competitive third set against the Ponies. Even late in the set, the Vigilantes had a 20-19 lead over the Ponies. But the Ponies responded to knot things up at 22-22. The Ponies then scored three straight points to win, 25-22, to finish off the match.

With the win, the Ponies start the year with a 2-0 record in non-conference play. The HHS volleyball team will next play in a conference match on the road against Glendive this Friday at 5 p.m.
