A rare blue moon - also a supermoon - lights up the sky and the lake at Beaver Creek Reservoir about 10 p.m. Tuesday. Blue moons occur when a full moon - the moon was at its fullest Wednesday - happens twice in the same month. This month's blue moon also occurred when the moon is closest to the earth in its orbit, called a supermoon.
