Havre artist receives award at 2023 Master's Show

Press release

Havre artist Carolyn Anderson received a top award at an international organization's Masters' Show.

Anderson received a silver medal for her painting "After the Bath" in the Signature and Invited Guests Division of the Oil Painters of America 2023 Masters' Show hosted this month in Phiillipsburg.

"I was honored to be asked to participate in the OPA Show this year and surprised and thrilled to accept the Silver Medal for my painting," Anderson said in a release from Oil Painters of America.

She described her painting as a portrayal of a universal theme in all of humanity.

"I believe a painting can be somewhat ambiguous in design and expression while still engaging in a dialogue with the viewer, and that the lack of specificity in the visual elements can be the doorway to that engagement," Anderson said in the release.

Originally from the Chicago area, Anderson attended school at Illinois State University, the release said. She has lived in north-central Montana for most of her adult life.

Anderson has developed her own singular style, learning from other artists who inspired and supported her, but experimenting with the boundaries of traditional techniques.

She has received numerous awards for her paintings, including twice winning the C.M. Russell Museum Auction Best of Show and also a CMR Artists' Choice Award. She has received Master Awards of Excellence at the American Impressionist Society show, Northwest Rendezvous Merit Awards, and a NWR President's Choice Award.

She has participated in major national shows for more than 30 years, including the Prix de West, C. M. Russell Museum Show, and the Coors Western Art Exhibit.
