This week will mark the start of training camp for the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzlies, who are on a collision course toward their annual showdown Nov. 19 in Missoula.
And in the case of the Cats, they are the favorite to win the Big Sky championship this fall.
MSU was picked first by both the coaches and media in the 2023 Big Sky Conference Preseason Poll. MSU reached the FCS semifinals a year ago, and was second in the Big Sky Conference behind undefeated Sacramento State.
As for the Grizzlies, they were picked to finish third in the Media Poll, but just sixth in the Coaches Poll. Montana tied for fifth in the Big Sky a season ago, and lost to North Dakota State in the second round of the FCS playoffs.
In the Media Poll, Idaho was picked second, while Sacramento State and UC Davis completed the top five. In the Coaches Poll, UC Davis was second, while Sacramento State, Weber State and Idaho rounded out to the top five.
The Bobcats also had Fullback Derek Snell, offensive linemen Rush Reimer and JT Reed, quarterback Sean Chambers, DL Sebastian Valdez and Brody Grebe and long snapper Tommy Sullivan named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Grizzlies saw Junior Bergem Trevin Gradney, linebacker Levi Janacaro, tackle Alex Gubner, and offensive lineman Hunter Mayginnes named to the Preseason All Conference Team.
Idaho wide receiver Hayden Hatten was named the Big Sky Preseason Offensive MVP, while Weber State linebacker Winston Reid was named Big Sky Preseason Defensive MVP.
Both the Cats and Griz begin fall practice later this week.
