Representatives of the Great Plains Veteran Services Center said in a release that they are excited to announce the center’s Second Annual Veterans Stand Down Thursday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Great Plains Veteran Services Center is a non-profit veterans organization formerly known as the Rocky Boy Veterans Center.

The center’s purpose is to support veterans and service members by helping them obtain the care and benefits they have earned through their service to this country, the release said.

Under the Highly Rural Transportation Grant, Great Plains Veteran Services Center provides safe and reliable transportation for veterans who require assistance traveling to and from VA health care facilities and authorized non-VA health care appointments, the release added. The services are for veterans from all military branches and all age brackets.

The center has five offices, serving veterans in 17 counties across the state of Montana. The Great Plains Veteran Services Center main office is in north-central Montana on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation with four additional offices, in Fort Belknap, Browning, Big Timber and Scobey. These are highly rural areas, which can negatively impact veterans obtaining VA health care.

In January of 2023, Great Plains Veteran Services Center launched its newest program, the Staff Sgt. Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, or SSG Fox SPGP. With the SSG Fox SPGP, the center is providing veteran outreach, case management, direct assistance, referral services, counseling resourcing, DD Form 214 retrieval, employment services and support for any issue that affects the quality of life and mental health of veterans. The service areas under the program are Blaine, Chouteau, Glacier, Hill and Phillips counties including the Rocky Boy’s, Fort Belknap and Blackfeet reservations.

The Great Plains Veterans Services Center second Veterans Stand Down even Thursday, July 27, is open to all veterans

It will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northern Winz Hotel and Casino Parking Lot Event Tent. Please note the event location, as it will be in the “Parking Lot Event Tent.”

Last year, some confusion arose about a veteran event being held “at” a casino.

Transportation to the event is available at no charge to veterans. People can call the transportation manager at 877-385-5250 to schedule a ride. Transportation reservations will be accepted through Tuesday, July 25, at 4 p.m.

The list of services ranges from housing, employment and education opportunities, medical, mental health, veteran services, food and clothing.

“Our goal is to bring guest speakers, various groups and service providers to collaborate together in supporting and encouraging our local veteran community,” the release said.

Lunch will be provided for all veterans, their families and event contributors.

Veteran give-aways include door prizes, raffle, free Stand Down T-shirt and a grand prize.

“Together, let’s give our veterans some resources and a chance to learn from some of the best support organizations in Montana” the release said.

People who want to learn more about the event, or to reserve a contributor table, can contact Rebecca Lewis at 406-395-5610.
