Northstars extend winning streak to ten games

Over the past couple weeks, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club has found its groove with an eight-game winning streak. And Thursday down in Great Falls, the Northstars continued their winning ways with 13-0 and 5-3 wins in a sweep against the Great Falls Chargers.

The Northstars started the doubleheader with their 13-0 win over the Chargers. After a pair of singles to start the top of the first inning, Kale Reno scored on a fielder's choice to give Havre the lead.

The Northstars took control of the game in the top of the second. Jevin Jenkins opened the inning with a solo home run to left field. After getting on base thanks to a walk, Ezra Pyle scored on an error to increase the lead. Another error then allowed Chason Mader to score.

With the bases loaded with no outs, Colter Solomon scored on a fielder's choice for the Northstars. Drake Berreth then scored on a passed ball to increase the lead to 6-0.

The Northstars continued to roll in the top of the third. After a pair of singles to open the inning, Solomon cleared the bases with a single to center to make it an 8-0 game. Berreth then drove him in for a run with a single to right to extend the lead to 9-0.

The Northstars went cold over the next few innings, but got hot again in the top of the seventh. Conner McKay got the inning started with an RBI single to left. With two men on, Tanner Delarosa cleared the bases with a single to right. Delarosa then scored on a groundout to push the lead to 13-0.

The Northstars closed it out in the bottom of the seventh with three quick outs. Lane Kinsella pitched the whole game as he allowed five hits and no runs and he struck out eight batters. At the plate, Solomon went 1-5 with three RBIs while Jenkins went 4-5 with an RBI.

The Northstars capped off the night with their 5-3 win in a back-and-forth game against the Chargers. Havre struck first in the top of the first thanks to an RBI double from Terek Shipp. Later in the inning, Jenkins hit a single to drive in Shipp for a run to make it a 2-0 game. However, the Chargers responded in the bottom of the first to tie the game 2-2.

The Northstars retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Delarosa scored on a wild pitch. But Great Falls responded in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 3-3. After a couple scoreless innings for both teams, the game remained tied heading into the seventh inning.

With one last chance to take the lead before possible extra innings, the Northstars took control in the top of the seventh. With a runner on, Pyle gave Havre the lead with a single to center. Berreth then hit a single to drive in Pyle for another run to give Havre a 5-3 lead.

The Northstars then closed it out in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win and the sweep. Solomon earned the win on the mound allowing no hits and he recorded two strikeouts as he pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game.

With the wins, the Northstars improved their record to 26-13-1 this season and they extended their winning streak to 10 straight games. The Havre Northstars will look to stay hot when they host the Lethbridge Miners in a doubleheader at Legion Field this Saturday starting at 5 p.m.
