Havre Northstars sweep Medicine Hat Knights on the road

On Tuesday night, the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club continued its season with a trip north of the border to face the Medicine Hat Knights. In a conference doubleheader on the road, the Northstars played well as they won 17-11 and 13-3 to sweep the night.

The Northstars started the night with their 17-11 win over the Knights. The Northstars got started in the top of the first when Brody Nanini scored on an error. Later in the inning, Kale Reno drove in a run with a single to right field to make it a 2-0 lead.

Medicine Hat scored in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to 2-1. Havre responded in the top of the second with an RBI double from Conner McKay to push the lead to 3-1. Medicine Hat then struck back with a run in the bottom of the third to cut Havre’s lead to 3-2.

The Northstars got on a roll in the top of the fourth. With two runners on board, Nanini cleared the bases with a triple to center to push the lead to 5-2. Nanini then later scored on a passed ball to push the advantage to 6-2.

Havre continued to roll in the top of the fifth. After getting on base because of an error, Drake Berreth scored on a fielder’s choice. Later in the inning, Chason Mader scored on a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 8-2.

In the top of the sixth, Berreth scored on an error. Terek Shipp then drove in a run with a single to right. Another bases-loaded walk brought Mader home for the score and then Jevin Jenkins drove in a pair of runs with a double to give Havre a 13-2 lead.

McKay then scored on a groundout to push the lead to 14-2. Berreth capped off the inning with a single to center that drove in a pair of runs to push the lead to 16-2. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Northstars had the chance to end the game early.

However, the Knights had other ideas as they got on a roll. Throughout the inning, the Knights put the ball in play to get hits, force errors and drive runners home. By the end of the inning, the Knights had scored eight runs to cut the deficit to 16-10 to extend the game.

In the top of the seventh, Nanini scored on a fielder’s choice to push Havre’s lead to 17-10. Medicine Hat tried to extend the game again as it scored a run in the bottom of the seventh. But that was all the Knights could muster as the Northstars held on to win.

Shipp earned the win as he allowed six hits and two earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. Nanini had a strong start to the night as he went 3-4 with two RBIs and he scored five runs. Jenkins made an impact going 1-4 with four RBIs.

The Northstars continued to play well on offense in their 13-3 victory over the Knights to end the night. After loading the bases early in the top of the first, Shipp scored on a sacrifice fly to give Havre the lead. Reno then drove in another run with a single to center.

The Knights responded with a couple runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. But the Northstars got right back to work in the top of the second. After a triple early in the inning, Nanini scored on an error to give Havre the lead again. McKay then drove in a run with a triple to center. McKay then scored on a lineout to push the lead to 5-2.

The Northstars added onto their lead in the top of the third. With a runner on, Nanini hit a double to left to drive in the run to make it an 8-2 lead. The Knights scored in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 8-3, but they could not slow down the Northstars

In the top of the fourth, Berreth drove in a run with a single to center. Berreth then scored on an error to push the lead to 10-3. Later in the inning, Nanini drove in a run with a single to center. Logan Kinsella then scored on a fielder’s choice to make it a 12-3 lead. Shipp then scored on an error to push the lead to 13-3.

The Northstars held the Knights scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings to win the game by run rule. Tanner Delrosa earned the win as he allowed seven hits and two earned runs in five innings pitched. At the plate, Nanini went 3-4 with four RBIs.

With the sweep, the Northstars improved their record to 15-10-1 this season. The Havre Northstars will continue the season with the Harold Gjerde Memorial Tournament in Lewistown starting this Thursday.
