43rd Annual Black Powder Spring Shoot held at Fort Assinniboine

Eighty-eight shooters participated in the 43rd annual Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club Spring Shoot held May 27-28-29 at historic Fort Assinniboine south of Havre.

The weather started out a little damp Saturday, but the temperature was not cold, although the needed rain did effect some scores.

Sunday and Monday were very nice days with only an occasional shower.

Shooting conditions would be rated as good.

Shooters came from all parts of Montana with attendance up from 2022. No records were broken or tied over the weekend.

Troy Brugman, Great Falls, captured the Overall Aggregate trophy with a score of 184 in five matches including 25-yard offhand, 50-yard offhand, 100-yard offhand, 50-yard cross sticks and 100-yard cross sticks.

Robert Sparks, Havre, won the 12 shot silhouette match with 10 hits out of 12. The offhand match has four distances three shots each at 4-inch buffalo at 50 yards, pigs at 100 yards, turkeys at 150 yards and a ram at 200 yards.

Sparks also won the Larry Sutter Memorial Long Range cartridge match with three hits, a pig (320 yards), a turkey (350 yards) and the ram (380 yards). This event consists of an offhand target at 270 yards and four cross stick targets, a pig at 320 yards, turkey at 350 yards, ram at 380 yards and buffalo at 580 yards.

The Cross Stick Aggregate went to Bob Doney, Havre with an 81 on two targets, 50 and 100 yards.

The Offhand Aggregate was won by Kent Morehouse, Glasgow, with 120 on three targets, 25, 50 and 100 yards.

The Pistol Aggregate went to Tom Brown, Havre with 158 on two targets, 25-yard and 50-yard both scoring a possible 100 points each.

The Women's Aggregate was claimed by Lacey Huseby, Havre, with 115x points on three targets, 25-OH, 50-OH and 50 cross sticks.

In the black powder cartridge events, Dick Hanson, Havre, won the Men's Cartridge Aggregate with 161xx on four targets; Women's Aggregate went to Amanda Owens, Havre, with 110 and the Junior Aggregate was won by Caleb Huseby, Havre, with 109. The cartridge events consist of four targets including 25-yard offhand, 50-yard offhand, 100-yard offhand and 100-yard cross sticks.

Tom Brown, Havre, won the Primitive Aggregate event for the second time in a row with a score of 126. The event includes 20 different fun shots such as cut a playing card, cut the strings, split the ball on ax head, frogs on a log shot from a canoe, and offhand-offhand shot (meaning if you are right handed you shoot left handed), flies on the wall and several long range shots. All targets are at various ranges.

Hawk and Knife throw for adults was won by Sam Chapman, Havre, for juniors Caleb Huseby, Havre, and sub juniors went to Stryder Owens, Helena.

The Bonita Griggs Memorial Frying Pan Throw for Women's division was won by Kaci Hipple, Havre, 61 ft. 9 in.; Seniors division went to Mary Owens, Havre, 35 ft. 11 in.; Juniors division was won by Ava Moomey, Havre, 42 ft. 1 in.; Pee-wee division went to Hadley Owens, Helena, 22 ft. 11 in.

The fire starting/pancake race Heat 1 was won by Hadley Owen, Helena and Kenzie St. Marks, Havre at 1 min. 52 sec.; Heat 2 went to Sidney Griggs, Havre and Kalliah Jones, Missoula at 1 min. 7 sec.; Heat 3 was won by Gage Chapman, Havre and Kaehl Owens, Helena, 2 min. 5 sec.
