Havre sees an eventful Saturday despite weather

While weather and flooding caused some events to be canceled, Saturday still saw a number of yearly events return to Havre.

The Bear Paw Marathon went on despite the rain, drawing a crowd of runners from across the state and beyond for a route through Beaver Creek Park.

This relatively new event has been drawing hundreds of participants in the three years it's been held and has become a major activity for the weekend.

The North Central Everything Antique Show also ran at the fairgrounds Friday through Sunday, featuring a plethora of displays that drew a large crowd of interested people from across the area.

Fort Assinniboine also had their Living History event Saturday complete with guided tours of the famous base as well as firearm displays, live music and free food.

Children were able to fire the fort's cannon as each tour left and hear from guides about the history of the fort, what life was like for its residents and the clothes and armaments they wore.

Fort Assinniboine Preservation Association Chairman Ron VandenBoom said the rainy weather seems to have depressed turnout a little bit this year, but they had plenty of people come after the precipitation died down.

VandenBoom said that while this year saw a bit less turnout, Living History has been doing well in the years since COVID-19, with attendance jumping right back up to normal after 2020, which he attributed to the fact that most of it is held outdoors.

He said he wanted to thank the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club for their demonstrations, Kris and Friends for providing music and all the other people who make the event happen.

Living History, which many local history organizations hold events for, was not without its setbacks, however.

Havre Beneath the Streets, which typically holds discounted tours with guides in period-accurate costume, was closed this year due to flooding that has been a problem since Wednesday of last week.

The Art Alley Spring Celebration was also canceled this year due to the poor weather.
