Kale Reno and the Havre Northstars are ready for the Havre Jamboree and the rest of this summer
The Havre Jamboree will return to Legion Field this weekend to kick off the summer. The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club will compete in four games across the weekend starting today. While he will miss the first couple games of the tournament, Kale Reno looks forward to playing in the Jamboree once again.
"It's a little different since it's a wood bat tournament so that should be pretty fun," Reno said. "It should be fun having all those new teams come up to Havre and to be able to play at home."
This will be Reno's final season with the Northstars after graduating high school a year ago. So far in his final season with the Northstars, Reno has made an impact both pitching and hitting for them.
On the mound, Reno leads the team with 17.2 innings pitched this season. In his four starts, he has recorded a 2-1 record, 20 strikeouts and a 3.962 ERA. At the plate, Reno has recorded a .395 batting average, a .509 on-base percentage and five RBIs this season. He has also scored 12 runs so far this year. While he has fun on both sides of the plate, Reno has a favorite.
"I enjoy pitching more," Reno said. "I like competing against all those other teams."
Once this season is over, Reno will have trouble saying goodbye to baseball. His family got him into the sport at a young age and it has been a part of his life ever since. His father Shane Reno, who is an assistant coach on the Northstars, has been instrumental in helping Kale become the player he is today.
"I just know he's always going to be there for me for whatever I need," Kale said.
Kale still has a couple months left with the Northstars before having to move on from the program. He hopes to help the team advance to and win regionals, but regardless of how the season ends, Kale will miss playing baseball.
"I just love the sport. It means a lot to me," Kale said.
Once he is done with the Northstars, Kale hopes to get a welding job with the welding degree he has. He also hopes to go back to college to earn a pipefitter degree. When he is not working or playing baseball, Kale enjoys fishing and hanging out with his friends in his free time.
Kale will continue his final season with the Northstars this weekend with the Havre Jamboree. Before he returned to Legion Field, Kale answered five questions for the Havre Daily News.
HDN: What do you love the most about baseball?
Kale: "The thing I most love about the game is playing with all my friends and being able to compete with all the other kids and all the other teams."
HDN: Do you have a favorite memory involving baseball?
Kale: "Just when we're all hanging out as a team doing fun things. Even though it's not the baseball games, we're just being together doing all these activities."
HDN: When you are pitching in a close game, how do you handle the pressure?
Kale: "I'm just making sure that I'm doing my job up there. Throwing strikes, getting grounders and getting pop flies to my team."
HDN: What have you enjoyed about this season so far?
Kale: "Just having what is pretty much a new team. For me it's a new team because I haven't played with half these kids so I'm glad that we're getting some new faces."
HDN: Over the years, what else have you enjoyed about your time in the program?
Kale: "Just getting to know all my friends here on the team and being able to get better throughout all those seasons."
