Grief Poem - Walking Alone

The precious gift of love we had - so lucky to receive,

We know that you would never want to see me as I grieve.

Sometimes, dear one, we sadly long for all the yesterdays;

We miss the chats, your gentleness and understanding ways.

How can I/we fill the void you left, this deep and desperate need?

They'll fade and crumble over years - but HOPE'S a lovely seed.

We know the death that you went through, our God brought you release,

And though we mourn as time's gone by, you have eternal peace.

We'll go through all our photos, dear, and see your smiling face.

For a moment, we will escape to peaceful, happy place.

Remembering the fun we had, and all that you would do,

Memories will stay, of those old days, of caring, loving you.

We'll miss you in the weeping rain - that does not ease our pain,

Or when snow melts or last year's leaves are smoke in every lane.

Long as I can, I'll look at life, the life of both of us,

I'll sing with birds, laugh with flowers, do this for both of us.

We have to mourn the loss of one, we'd done our best to save,

T'was loved on earth, regretted still, thought of beyond the 'grave'.

Sweet are memories of our dear one, and dear to us her/his name.

Memories remain – within our heart, they'll always there remain.

Weeks, months or years, your life blessed us; you're missed most all the time.

The life we had, sweet memories; makes Grief Hill hard to climb.

Walking alone on this Grief Hill, we do it out of love.

But someday soon, we shall be called, we'll meet you up above.

Prairie Winds, 2023
