Havre High Tennis to begin postseason with Divisionals

The Havre High tennis teams will begin the postseason this week with the Eastern A Divisional in Lewistown. As the Blue Ponies compete in their biggest meet yet this season, HHS head coach Jeff Miller is excited to see them compete.

“I think everyone just wants to go, as they know if they play well that we’ll have a lot of success. I think that’s just the main part of it,” Miller said. “Some of our more experienced kids want to make it to state and possibly place at state. And I think our kids more or less are there to get a few points at divisionals and hopefully squeak out a few wins.”

At divisionals, the Ponies will face many familiar opponents. Over the next few days, the Ponies will face players from Glendive, Lewistown and Sidney. However, Miller expects Miles City to be their toughest opponent on both the boys and the girls side.

With a spot in the state meet on the line, Havre’s best players will look to put their best foot forward this week. In boys singles, Carter Spangler will look to have a strong start to the postseason after a strong season. Callen Stoner will also compete in singles and will be looking to clinch a spot in the state meet.

The Ponies will also look for success in boys doubles this week. The doubles team of Reid Kato and Conner McKay will look to do well this week. The doubles team of Max Spangler and Jackson Headdress has also had a strong season that they hope to continue at divisionals.

In her final year with the Ponies, Rayna Johnson will be looking to qualify for state in girls singles. In girls doubles, the senior tandem of Courtney Burchard and Cat Kaftan have had a strong season and will look to start their final postseason strong.

After several months of strong play from the Ponies, it is now time for them to play at their best. With spots in next week’s state meet in Missoula on the line, Miller believes the Ponies just need to stay the course this week.

“I think everyone just needs to play like they know how,” Miller said. “I think as long as we go out and play well, then we’ll have plenty of success.”

The HHS tennis teams will begin the Eastern A Divisional Meet today in Lewistown. It will continue over the next few days until wrapping up Friday.
