The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball club continued its season with a road trip this past weekend. Across three games in Laurel and Billings, the Northstars went 1-2 in their games. Saturday, the Northstars split with the Laurel Dodgers with a 4-3 loss and a 10-8 victory. However, the Northstars lost, 10-4, to the Billings Blue Jays Sunday.
The Northstars began the weekend with a 4-3 loss to the Laurel Dodgers. In the bottom of the first, Laurel scored to take a 1-0 lead. The Northstars responded in the top of the second with an RBI single from Tanner Delarosa to tie the game.
However, the Dodgers got rolling in the bottom of the third as they scored a trio of runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Northstars eventually responded in the top of the sixth. After Brody Nanini got on base thanks to a Laurel error, Jevin Jenkins hit a home run to left field to cut the deficit to 4-3.
But the Dodgers held Havre scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win. It was a low-scoring affair as both teams only recorded four hits in the contest. On the mound, Nanini pitched the whole way as he allowed four hits, three earned runs and recorded six strikeouts.
The Northstars rebounded with a 10-8 win over the Dodgers later Saturday. In the top of the second, the Northstars took the lead when Terek Shipp scored on a passed ball. However, the Dodgers got on a roll in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Northstars were able to respond in the top of the fourth. Again, Shipp scored on a passed ball for the Northstars. Kale Reno then drove in a run with a single to make it a 3-3 game.
In the top of the fifth, the Northstars took the lead again. They broke through when Jenkins scored on a groundout. Shipp then scored on another passed ball to add onto the lead. Chason Mader then scored on a wild pitch to give Havre a 6-3 lead to end the inning.
The Dodgers responded in the bottom of the fifth to cut Havre's lead to 6-4. But the Northstars could not be stopped. Jenkins scored a run to add onto Havre's lead and then Shipp scored on a groundout. Ezra Pyle then scored to give Havre a 9-4 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Reno scored on a groundout to push the lead to 10-4. But the Dodgers did not go away as they scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 10-8. Thankfully for Havre, the Northstars got a groundout for the third out to close out the game.
Shipp had a strong game as he went 3-5 at the plate and he scored four runs. Reno also batted well as he went 2-3 with an RBI. On the mound, Delarosa picked up the win as he allowed two hits, three earned runs and recorded two strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
Sunday, the Northstars ended the weekend with a 10-4 loss to the Billings Blue Jays. After a slow start for both teams, the Blue Jays struck first in the bottom of the third with a couple runs to take a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Northstars responded. With two runners on, Tyson Brandon drove in a run with a single to center to get Havre on the board. Logan Kinsella and Brandon then both scored on a passed ball to give the Northstars a 3-2 lead.
However, the Blue Jays responded in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. They then got rolling in the bottom of the fifth to push their lead to 9-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Billings scored again to make it a 10-3 game.
In the top of the ninth, Drake Berreth scored on an error to cut into the deficit. But the Blue Jays recorded the third out to hand the Northstars the loss. At the plate, Nanini went 2-5 and scored a run for the Northstars.
At the end of the weekend, the Havre Northstars stand at 7-7 on their season. The Havre Northstars will next play this Wednesday at 6 p.m. against the Great Falls Chargers AA team in Great Falls.
