Chinook boys take first at District 9C Meet

The postseason began in high school track and field with the District 9C Track Meet Wednesday. At the Havre Middle School Track, many athletes from across the Hi-Line competed in the boys meet in order to qualify for the Northern C Divisional.

At the end of the day, the Chinook boys team took first in the meet with 168 total points. As they began the postseason, Chinook head coach Kendall Harwood was happy with how the Sugarbeeters performed.

"They came here and they stepped up," Harwood said. "They really put out some good performances and we're pretty happy with it."

Over the course of the day, several Sugarbeeters had strong performances to lead them to victory. Brenden Fetter had a strong day as he set district records in the long jump and the triple jump. He took first in the long jump with a distance of 21-08 and he took first in the triple jump with a distance of 45-01.75.

Even when he was not setting records, Fetter performed well in other events for the Sugarbeeters. He finished first in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 22.97 and he took second in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 11.40.

"I'm giving that kid all the credit he deserves," Harwood said about Fetter. "He's a great athlete and we can't wait to see what he can do at divisionals and state."

Many other Sugarbeeters performed well at the meet. Levi Jensen took first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.52 and he took first in the high jump with a measurement of 6-01. He also took second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.29.

Braxton Inman had a strong showing as he took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.01. Along with earning a high finish, Inman was happy to finally get the postseason started with the District 9C meet.

"It feels good. I always love competing in track meets," Inman said. "It's always fun to race against people I know."

Chinook's Landen Beck took second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:14.12 and he took second in the 3,200-meter dash with a time of 11:33.43. His teammate Oliver Standiford took second in the high jump with a measurement of 5-10. In the long jump, Carson Nissen took second with a measurement of 19-09.5.

In the 1,600-meter dash, Chinook's Britt Powell took second with a time of 5:21.36. His teammate Owen Davies took third in the 800 with a time of 2:15.58 and fellow Sugarbeeter Tyler Schoen took third in the shot put with a distance of 41-09.

Chinook also did well in the relay events. In the 400 relay, the Chinook team of Nissen, Schoen, Inman and Fetter took first with a time of 44.86. In the 1,600 relay, the Chinook team of Davies, Beck, Standiford and Danny McKenzie took second with a time of 3:56.24.

Chester-Joplin-Inverness and Big Sandy tied for second in the boys meet with 78 total points. The Pioneers had many strong finishes on the day. Wylee Snapp took first in both the shot put and the discus. He recorded a distance of 44-02.25 in the shot put and he recorded a distance of 149-06 in the discus.

Fellow Pioneer Cooper Taylor had a strong day as he took first in the javelin with a distance of 151-10 and he took first in the 100 with a time of 11.20. He also took second in the 200 with a time of 24.03 and he took second in the discus with a distance of 124-04.

Other Pioneers performed well in other events. In the triple jump, Kody Strutz took third with a measurement of 38-10.25. In the discus, Ryder Galbavy took third with a distance of 122-00. In the 400 relay, the Big Sandy team of Strutz, Snapp, Taylor and Austin Haugen took second with a time of 46.30.

CJI also had several strong performers throughout the day. Cooper Streit ran well as he took first in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. He recorded a time of 5:07.88 in the 1,600 and he posted a time of 11:07.37 in the 3,200.

His teammate Ryland St. John took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.52 and he took second in the triple jump with a measurement of 40-00.5. Fellow Hawk Braden Mattson took second in the javelin with a distance of 143-00. He also took third in the 400 with a time of 56.14 and he took third in the long jump with a measurement of 19-08.25.

Fort Benton took fourth in the meet with 76 total points thanks to several strong performances. Teagan Reimer took first in the pole vault with a measurement of 10-03. His teammate Trevor O'Hara took second in the pole vault with a measurement of 10-00.

Fellow Longhorn Brock Grossman took second in the 400 with a time of 53.41. His teammate Nathan Dunham took third in the 100 with a time of 11.40 and he took third in the 200 with a time of 24.10.

The Longhorns also ran well in the relay events. In the 1,600 relay, the Fort Benton team of Dunham, Grossman, Eli Arganbright and David Olson took first with a time of 3:47.59. In the 400 relay, the Fort Benton team of Dunham, Arganbright, Grossman and Reimer took third with a time of 47.32.

The North Star Knights took fifth in the boys meet with 69 total points. Gavin Clawson took second in the shot put with a distance of 44-02 and Chris Burkhartsmayer took third in the javelin with a distance of 135-04.

North Star's Carter Campbell took third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:23.07 and he took third in the 3,200 with a time of 11:35.75. His teammate Xander Searles ran well as he took third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 19.07 and he took third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.86. He also took third in the pole vault with a measurement of 9-06. In the 1,600 relay, the North Star team of Burkhartsmayer, Searles, Carter and Joshua Campbell took third with a time of 4:04.08.

Turner took sixth in the meet with 36 total points. Ryan Doyle ran well as he took first in the 400 with a time of 52.46 and he took first in the 800 with a time of 2:02.21. Hays-Lodge Pole took seventh in the meet with 15 total points. Cash Messerly had the best finish for the Thunderbirds as he took third in the high jump with a measurement of 5-10. Box Elder scored five total points as a team in the meet.

The top five finishes in each of these events will now advance to the Northern C Divisional Track Meet in Great Falls next week. Even those who did not place in the top five might still advance as at-large bids.

After earning the chance to compete another week, these athletes should feel proud of themselves. But as another meet awaits them, these track and field athletes are already looking forward to putting their best foot forward in order to qualify for state.

"There's always room to improve in our distance and running times," Inman said. "I feel like we're going to make it to state."

The Northern C Divisional Track and Field Meet will begin in Great Falls May 18.
