Havre softball rolls over Lewistown to complete season sweep

The Blue Ponies finish the regular season undefeated in the Northeast A

In the Northeast A this season, the Havre High softball team has been dominant en route to a 7-0 record. Even on the road on Monday, the Blue Ponies continued to dominate their conference as they defeated Lewistown, 13-4, in the final conference game of the regular season.

The Ponies quickly took the lead in the top of the first inning. With a runner on, Molly Huse hit a home run to right field to give Havre a 2-0 lead. Then in the top of the second, Hannah Gingery scored on an error to push the lead to 3-0.

The Eagles responded in the bottom of the fourth with a couple of runs to cut Havre’s lead to 3-2. However, the Ponies continued to roll in the top of the fifth. After two singles from Danni Writzberger and Avery Carlson to start the inning, Camille Keeley hit a home run to center field to push the lead to 6-2.

In the top of the sixth, the Ponies continued to extend their lead. After a double from Elle Verploegen to start the inning, Wirtzberger brought her home with another double. Carlson then drove in a run with a single to left field.

Lizzi Haney kept it rolling with an RBI single to make it a 9-2 game. Keeley then drove in another run with a double to right field. Jersi Morse capped off the inning with an RBI single to make it an 11-2 lead for the Ponies.

In the top of the seventh, Rachel Jette scored on a groundout to increase the lead. Shelby Huston then scored on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 13-2. The Eagles scored a couple of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Ponies were able to close it out.

On the mound, Verploegen picked up another win at pitcher as she allowed seven hits, two earned runs, one walk and she recorded eight strikeouts. Many Ponies had strong days at the plate as Carlson went 3-5 with an RBI and Keeley went 2-3 with four RBIs.

Along with finishing the regular season 8-0 in the Northeast A, the Ponies improved their record to 14-2 on the year. The Ponies have now secured the No. 1 seed for the divisional tournament in Billings later this tournament, putting themselves in good position to win another divisional title and clinch a spot in the state tournament once again.

Before beginning the postseason, the Ponies will end the regular season with the Laverne Tournament in Butte starting this Friday.
