Blue Ponies win small Havre Triangular meet

After this past weekend's Havre Lions Invitational was canceled, the Havre High track and field teams were able to squeeze in a meet Monday at the Havre Middle School Track. With their lone competition being Harlem and Malta on short notice, the Blue Ponies took first in both the boys and girls meets of the Havre Triangular.

"The kids competed well against themselves because we were very deep in our sprints and our distances," HHS head coach Kari Filius said. "It was nice to see us compete hard against each other and get some really good times and distances."

During the meet, the Ponies held their senior day ceremony that they were unable to hold Saturday. During the ceremony, the Ponies honored Kale Van Campen, Brody Henry, Ethan Elliot, Evan Baker, Cory Kueffler, Chase Mariani, Chloe Shennum, Hannah Kinsella, Clarissa Botticelli, Ali Maloughney and Mallory Murray. With it being their last time competing at home, the Ponies felt the emotions.

"It didn't hit me until the start of the day. The last meet being on the home track, it was really emotional," Henry said. "But even with a smaller crowd, it was really nice to have people here supporting us."

The HHS boys team scored 227 total points to take first in its meet. Throughout the afternoon, the Ponies performed well in many events.

In the 100-meter sprint, Brayden Kimberling took first with a time of 11.71 and Brisbin Reiter took third with a time of 12.03. In the 200-meter sprint, Kimberling took first with a time of 23.35 and Michael Emge finished second with a time of 23.71. In the 400-meter dash, Deven Tyler took second with a time of 56.58.

In the 800-meter dash, Caleb Tomac took first with a time of 2:02.05 while Henry took second with a time of 2:02.75 and Zack May took third with a time of 2:06.00. In the 1,600-meter dash, Mason Gregoire took second with a time of 5:04.84 and Riley Kacher finished third with a time of 5:05.06. In the 3,200-meter dash, Braeden Nimmick took third with a time of 13:24.00.

Ciaran Courtnage took first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.06. In the pole vault, Jacob Herring took first with a measurement of 10-00, Reed Mantle took second with a measurement of 9-06 and Teegan Solomon took third with a measurement of 9-06.

In the long jump, Van Campen took first with a measurement of 17-02 and Ezra Goldhahn took second with a measurement of 16-03.5. In the shot put, Tommy Lewis took second with a distance of 40-09.25 and Andrew LaRoque took third with a distance of 38-05.5.

LaRoque took first in the discus with a distance of 118-04 while Lewis took second with a distance of 106-00 and Elliot finished third with a distance of 98-03. In the javelin, Pierce Caplette finished third with a distance of 120-08.

The HHS boys also did well in the relay events. In the 400 relay, the Havre 'A' team of Reiter, Kimberling, Shane Patacsil and Carson Harris took first with a time of 45.38. In that same event, the HHS 'B' team of Herring, Van Campen, Emge and Trayden Riley took second with a time of 45.57. In the 1,600 relay, the team of Patacsil, Herring, Emge and Riley took first with a time of 3:36.33.

The HHS girls team scored 198 total points to win its meet. In the 100, Kaydance Reiter took first with a time of 13.27, Macy Brandon took second with a time of 13.47 and Carolyn Thomas took third with a time of 13.56. In the 200, Reiter took first with a time of 27.34, Brandon took second with a time of 28.00 and Sierra Parker took third with a time of 28.96.

Hailey Gingery took second in the 800 with a time of 2:30.84. In the 1,600, Paige Anderson took first with a time of 6:25.50 and Clara Haslem took second with a time of 6:46.53. Jayla Meldrum took first in the 3,200 with a time of 13:59.00.

Kyanna Jarvis took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.82 and Amaya Jarvis took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.15. Kyanna Jarvis also took second in the high jump with a measurement of 4-10.

Taylor Leeds took first in the pole vault with a measurement of 7-06. Clara Laird took first in the discus with a distance of 94-07 and she took first in the javelin with a distance of 101-07.5.

In the 400 relay, the HHS team of Thomas, Brandon, Reiter and Kyanna Jarvis took first with a time of 51.63. In the 1,600 relay, the Havre team of Reiter, Brandon, Kyanna Jarvis and Amaya Jarvis took first with a time of 4:22.05.

With it being a smaller meet, the HHS athletes competed in less events than they would usually do. Under these circumstances, Filius believes the Ponies competed harder with less events to compete in.

"They found that they could push a little harder in some of the events they were doing because they knew they weren't going to do them all," Filius said.

The season nears its end as the postseason begins next week. With just one more meet left in the regular season, the Ponies feel like they are peaking at just the right time.

"I think we're progressing really well. We're all dropping times, throwing farther, jumping farther," Henry said. "I think we're going to be really dangerous going into the postseason, especially divisionals. I think we got a chance to take home a plaque."

The HHS track and field teams will wrap up the regular season with the Dawson County Twilight Meet in Glendive this Friday.
