The Havre High track and field teams are in the thick of their season, which will continue with the Whitefish Invitational this weekend. With important meets coming up, HHS head coach Kari Filius hopes to see the Blue Ponies continue to improve their times this weekend.
“Hopefully, we can keep getting our times down. It’s our last meet before the top 10, so I want to get a few more kids qualified in the region to go to that top 10 meet on Tuesday,” Filius said. “Just keep getting those distances and times down where they need to be for the postseason.
The Ponies will face many teams at the meet this weekend. Some schools that will compete include Bigfork, Browning, Cut Bank, Heritage Academy, Hot Springs, Libby, Lincoln County, Plains, Polson and Thompson Falls. On the girls side, Filius expects Whitefish to be the toughest competition. On the boys side, Filisu expects Whitefish and Columbia Falls to do well.
Filius expects to do well in the hurdles at this weekend’s meet. On the girls side, Kyanna Jarvis is coming off a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at last weekend’s Gold Strike Invitational in Laurel. On the boys side, Jacob Herring is coming off a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and Ciaran Courtnage is coming off a sixth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles.
Filius also believes the Ponies should run well in the long-distance events this weekend. Brody Henry is coming off a second-place finish in the 800-meter dash and a fifth-place finish in the 1,600-meter dash. Caleb Tomac is coming off a second-place finish in the 1,600 for the Ponies. Jayla Meldrum will look to do well after taking fifth in the 1,600 this past weekend.
The Ponies have been successful in the sprints this season and they will look to continue that this weekend. Last weekend, Kaydance Reiter took first in both the 100-meter sprint and the 200-meter sprint. Macy Brandon also did well in those events with a fourth-place finish in the 100 and a fifth-place finish in the 200.
Brayden Kimberling will look to replicate last weekend’s performance, where he finished third in both the 100 and the 200. Ela Harbor is coming off a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash while Trayden Riley looks to improve on his fourth-place finish in the 400.
Other Ponies will look to build off their strong finishes at last weekend’s meet. Macee May took fourth in the long jump in the last meet while her teammate Taylor Leeds finished sixth in the pole vault in the same meet. Kale Van Campen will look to build off his third-place finish in the triple jump.
The Ponies are only a few weeks away from beginning the postseason. As that day inches closer and closer, Filius expects the Ponies will look to use this weekend’s meet as a chance to continue improving and continue succeeding.
“I think we’ll do well in the events that we’ve been doing well in and keep pushing,” Filius said. “We should have some good times and we should have a good day.”
The HHS track and field teams will begin the Whitefish Invitational this Saturday at 10 a.m.
