The Havre High softball team has been rolling to start the season, but it will face a tough test this weekend when it competes in the Frenchtown Tournament. The Blue Ponies will face many tough teams at the tournament, so HHS head coach Tony Vigliotti believes it will be a good chance for them to continue improving.
“We want to keep getting better every day and I think we’re doing that. It’s going to be a great opportunity for us,” Vigliotti said. “It’ll be a good test for us and I like the way we’re playing right now.”
The Ponies will face several tough teams at the tournament. They are going to face Frenchtown, who the Ponies faced twice last year. In the regular season, Frenchtown defeated Havre 7-3. Then in the state tournament, Frenchtown defeated Havre 15-1.
The Ponies will also face Polson in the tournament this weekend. The Ponies also faced Polson in the state tournament, where Polson won 12-4. The Ponies will also have games against Stevensville and Florence this weekend. The Ponies got the better of Stevensville last year, where they won 18-7 and 20-5.
The Ponies enter the weekend with an overall record of 8-1 this season. If the Ponies want to continue to roll and do well against these tough teams this weekend, their best players will need to step up.
Elle Verploegen will get time at pitcher, where she has had success this season. In six starts this season, she has a 5-1 record with an ERA of 3.000. She has had 52 strikeouts and allowed 12 walks. Rachel Jette has also pitched for Havre this season, with a 3-0 record and a 1.750 ERA.
Most importantly, the Ponies will need to get the bats going like they have done so far this season. Avery Carlson leads the team with a .552 batting average and a .675 on-base percentage this season. She also has 18 RBIs and three home runs for the Ponies.
Camille Keeley is off to a hot start this season with 23 RBIs and three home runs of her own. Jersi Morse and Molly Huse will also look to keep up their play as they both have two home runs, at least 13 RBIs and a batting average above .400 this season.
The Ponies have been rolling with six straight wins, most of them coming by double digits. As they head into these tough games this weekend, Vigliotti believes the Ponies just need to maintain the energy they have had all season if they want to continue winning.
“These guys are so competitive and they get along so well,” Vigliotti said. “They root for one another so we just need to keep doing that and keep being ourselves and just keep getting better every time we go out.”
The HHS softball team will begin the Frenchtown Tournament today.
