Big Sandy's Malaysia Baumann looks for another trip to state in her final season
Over the next few weeks, many athletes from across the Hi-Line will compete in track and field. One of those athletes is Malaysia Baumann from Big Sandy, who looks to make the most out of her final season competing for the Pioneers.
"I look forward to making it to state in the triple jump," Baumann said.
Baumann has been participating in track and field since middle school. In her time competing for the Big Sandy Pioneers, Baumann has competed in the 100-meter sprint, the 200-meter sprint, the triple jump and the long jump.
Her favorite event to compete in over the years has been the triple jump, considering the fact that she has qualified for state in that event almost every year of her career.
However, her career has not always been smooth sailing. Earlier this spring, the season was delayed by the lingering effects of a long and cold winter. Baumann and her teammates were forced to practice indoors as they waited for the season to finally get rolling. In fact, Baumann and the Pioneers did not have their first outdoor practice until last week, a couple days before the Cal Wearley Memorial Track Meet.
At the Cal Wearley this past weekend. Baumann competed for the Pioneers in the 100, the 200, the triple jump, the long and the 400 relay. Her best finish came in the triple jump as she finished ninth with a measurement of 30-04.25. She also set a personal record of 15.36 in the 100 and a season record of 32.52 in the 200.
Like many other athletes across the Hi-Line, Baumann is a multi-sport athlete. She competes in volleyball and basketball for the Pioneers throughout the season. In the summer, she also competes in swimming.
Once she is done with her senior season, Baumann plans to study cosmetology either in Billings or Great Falls. Before that, she looks to end her senior season with another trip to state. Before Baumann continued her season this spring, the Havre Daily News got the chance to ask her five questions.
