The best of the best track and field athletes from across the Hi-Line gathered at the Havre Middle School Track this past Saturday to compete in the Cal Wearley Memorial Track Meet. Over the course of the day, athletes from Fort Benton, Chinook, Big Sandy, Turner, Box Elder, Harlem, Rocky Boy, Chester-Joplin-Inverness, North Star and Hays-Lodge Pole showcased their skills and talents.
In the girls track meet, Chinook finished third with 43 total points. Hallie Neibauer had a strong day for the Sugarbeeters as she finished first in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:29.00. She also finished fourth in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 1:04.35.
Anna Terry finished first in the 3,200-meter dash with a time of 12:28.70. Neva Lowe also had a strong day as she took second in the 1,600-meter dash with a time of 6:05.53 and she took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:42.90. In the 800, Alexus Seymour finished third with a time of 2:39.30.
The Chinook girls team also did well in the 1,600 relay. The relay team consisting of Seymour, Lowe, Neibauer and Emma Klingaman finished sixth in the event with a time of 4:48.54.
The Fort Benton girls team finished fourth in its meet with 35 total points. Angeline Riener had a solid day for the Longhorns with a second-place finish in the high jump and a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. She recorded a measurement of 5-00 in the high jump and she posted a time of 17.45 in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the long jump, Fort Benton's Etta Wicks finished third with a distance of 15-10. Emerson Giese had a solid day as she took fourth in the 200-meter sprint and she took sixth in the 400. She recorded a time of 28.67 in the 200 and a time of 1:05.30 in the 400.
Kylynn Nack performed well for the Longhorns in the pole vault and the shot put. She finished fifth in the pole vault with a measurement of 6-06 and she took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 28-11.
The Fort Benton girls also did well in the relay events. In the 400 relay, the team of Giese, Riener, Wicks and Sarah Clark finished fourth with a time of 54.60. In the 1,600 relay, the team of Riener, Clark, Wicks and Giese finished fourth with a time of 4:42.33.
The North Star girls team finished fifth with 34 total points. Rainee Watson performed well as she took first in the javelin with a distance of 108-04. She also took third in the discus with a distance of 103-01.
North Star's Kaytlyn Domire performed well in many events Saturday. She finished second in the shot put with a distance of 32-06 and she took second in the discus with a distance of 103-07.5. She also placed fifth in the javelin with a distance of 98-04. With it still being early in the year, North Star head coach Brian Campbell liked how the Knights performed.
"For an early-season track meet, I think the kids performed well on the track and did well in the field events," Campbell said. "As a coach, you're looking for a performance that you can judge the rest of the season by so I think we got that day."
Turner finished 11th in the girls meet with 14 total points. Bridget Reed led the way in many events for the Tornadoes. She finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.60. She also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.49 and she took fourth in the high jump with a measurement of 4-08.
CJI also scored 14 total points to tie with Turner in the girls meet. Jayla Ramberg finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 34-02.75. Brie Mattson also performed well as she took fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:05.10 and she took fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 32-01.
Big Sandy and Harlem also had some high finishes in the girls meet. Big Sandy's Alex Worrall had a solid day as she took fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:44.00 and she took fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:14.94. Big Sandy's Angela Sant finished sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:24.18.
Harlem's Kaitlyn Johnson finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.20. Harlem's Cadence Fortin took fifth in the high jump with a measurement of 4-08 and her teammate Keona Medicine Bear took sixth in the high jump with a measurement of 4-08. Box Elder's Meiyah Oats took fifth in the long jump with a distance of 14-09.5.
In the boys meet, Chinook finished fourth with 43 total points. Brenden Fetter performed well in many events for the Sugarbeeters. He took second in the 100 with a time of 11.40 and he finished second in the long jump with a distance of 20-08.5.
Levi Jensen also did well as he took third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.25 and he finished fourth in the high jump with a measurement of 6-00. Braxton Inman finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.70 and he took sixth in the 100 with a time of 11.65. Oliver Standiford finished fifth in the high jump with a measurement of 5-08.
Chinook also did well in the 400 relay. The team made up of Fetter, Inman, Carson Nissen and Tyler Schoen finished second in the event with a time of 46.30.
Big Sandy finished fifth in the boys meet with 26 total points. Cooper Taylor had a strong day for the Pioneers as he took first in the javelin with a distance of 148-0. He also placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.62 and he took fifth in the 200 with a time of 24.22. Along with some strong finishes, Taylor was happy to compete after several weeks of delay earlier in the season.
"It's been nice to be able to get out and compete," Taylor said. "There's some good athletes here and it's been good to compete."
Wylee Snapp also performed well in several events for Big Sandy. He finished second in the shot put with a distance of 43-09 and he took fourth in the discus with a distance of 123-11.
Fort Benton scored 21.5 total points to take seventh in the boys meet. Brock Grossman took third in the 400 with a time of 55.01 and his teammate Landis Arganbright took fourth in the 400 with a time of 55.03. In the pole vault, Morgan Axtman took fifth with a measurement of 9-06.
Fort Benton also did well in both relay events. In the 400 relay, the Fort Benton team of Arganbright, Grossman, Nathan Dunham and Truman Giese finished fourth with a time of 47.00. In the 1,600 relay, the team of Grossman, David Olson, Eli Arganbright and Landis Arganbright took third with a time of 3:48.94.
Harlem scored 16 points as a team in the boys meet. Branlin Foote performed well as he took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:58.20 and he finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 10:21.70.
Many other athletes from across the Hi-Line performed well in Saturday's meet. Turner's Ryan Doyle finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:09.10 and he took sixth in the 400 with a time of 55.60.
From North Star, Gavin Clawson finished third in the shot put with a distance of 43-02 and he took third in the discus with a distance of 128-09. His teammate Carter Campbell took sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:25.70.
From Rocky Boy, Kellen Colliflower finished second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.74 and he finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.10. Ryland St. John from Chester-Joplin-Inverness finished sixth in the triple jump with a measurement of 38-07. William Has the Eagle of Hays-Lodge Pole took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 38-10.
All these schools will head on the road for various meets across the next few weeks. But they will return to the Havre Middle School Track when they begin the postseason with the District 9C Track Meet May 10.
