Facing their toughest competition of the season, and once again in adverse weather conditions, the Havre High tennis teams has plenty to like about last weekend’s Class A Invite in Cut Bank,
Havre faced East Helena and Libby Friday, then returned to Cut Bank for matches against defending Billings Central and Polson — two Class A powerhouses — Saturday afternoon.
In Friday’s duals, the Havre boys beat East Helena and Libby 4-3.
The Ponies’ top doubles tandem of Reid Kato and Conner McKay went 2-0, as did Max Spangler and Jackson Headdress at No. 2 doubles. Carter Chagnon and Mason Kinsella also won twice at No. 3 for the Ponies.
The Pony boys came to Cut Bank to face defending state champion Billings Central Saturday, and Havre was edged 4-3 by the Rams. The Ponies were then swept by Class A favorite Polson to round out the weekend.
Top Havre singles player Carter Spangler went 2-2 for Havre against four State A qualifiers from a year ago, including Class A All-Staters Ryan Beagle of Libby and Torrin Ellis of Polson. Spangler also beat Central’s top standout in Connor Brown of East Helena.
Meanwhile, the Pony girls lost close duals to East Helena and Libby Friday, falling 4-3 in both. Kate Hemmer was strong for Havre in singles with a pair of wins. Havre then beat Billings Central 4-3 on Saturday, before falling to Polson 5-2. The Pirates are perhaps the favorites in Class A.
Havre got a huge weekend from its top doubles team of Cat Kaftan and Courtney Burchard, who went 4-0 including an 8-5 win over the top doubles team from Polson.
Havre will now head on the road for this weekend’s Haridn Invite, which runs Friday and Saturday.
