Havre track and field starts the season strong

After a long and cold winter, the Havre High track and fields finally began the season with the Wibaux Invitational in Glendive this past Friday. In their first meet this spring, the Blue Ponies competed well as the HHS boys team took first in its meet while the HHS girls team finished fourth in its meet.

"It was a really good first meet for us. We had a lot of really good performances and I'm really proud of all of them," HHS head coach Kari Filius said. "We just had a lot of really good marks. Some of us had times really close to how they ended last year."

In the boys meet, the Ponies took first with 186 total points. Glendive came in second while Lustre Christian finished third in the meet. On the girls side, the Ponies finished fourth with 98 total points. Plentywood won the girls meet with 159 total points while Scobey finished second and Savage finished third.

On the boys team, many Ponies placed high in their events to lead the team to first place. Brayden Kimberling started the season strong with a first-place finish in both the 100-meter sprint and the 200-meter sprint. He recorded a time of 11.64 in the 100 and a time of 23.65 in the 200.

Caleb Tomac had a strong start to the year in the long-distance runs. He took first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:40.13 and he took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.63.

Brody Henry ran well in the long-distance runs at the meet. He took second in the 800 with a time of 2:04.35 and he finished fifth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.17. In the sprints, Brisbin Reiter took fourth in both the 100 and the 200. He posted a time of 12.13 in the 100 and he recorded a time of 24.42 in the 200.

Many other Ponies performed well Friday. Kale Van Campen took second in the triple jump with a distance of 40-05. Michael Emge finished third in the 200 with a time of 24.34. Jacob Herring finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.34 and he took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.71.

The HHS boys team ran well in the relay events. In the 400 relay, the HHS 'A' team consisting of Reiter, Van Campen, Kimberling and Carson Harris finished second with a time of 45.41. In that same race, the HHS 'B' team made up of Herring, Emge, Rhett Wertheimer and Trayden Riley took fifth with a time of 46.38. In the 1,600 relay, the HHS team consisting of Tomac, Henry, Riley and Kimberling took third with a time of 3:44.55.

In its fourth-place finish, the HHS girls team had several strong performers at the meet. In the 100-meter hurdles, Kyanna Jarvis finished second with a time of 17.14. Kaydance Reiter finished second for the Ponies in both the 100 and the 200. She posted a time of 13.24 in the 100 and a time of 27.11 in the 200.

Hailey Gingery performed well in the long-distance runs at the meet. She took fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:28.98 and she finished sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:54.02. In the 100, Macy Brandon finished fifth with a time of 13.73.

Macee May finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 33-09.50, which already qualified her for the state meet later this season. Maggie Daniels took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 30-02 and Clara Laird took sixth in the javelin with a distance of 92-05. In the 400 relay, the HHS team made up of May, Jarvis, Kaydance Reiter and Carolyn Thomas finished first with a time of 51.87.

After a long and cold winter, the Ponies were happy to finally begin the season this past weekend. After a strong start to the season, they will look to carry that over into the rest of the year. As they move forward, Filius believes the Ponies just have to stay the course if they want to succeed this spring.

"We have to just keep doing what we're doing," Filius said. "Everybody's doing where we expected and even better."

The HHS track and field teams will continue the season with the Fergus Meet in Lewistown this Thursday. The Ponies then return to Havre for the Cal Wearly Memorial this Saturday at the Havre Middle School Track.
