Havre track and field set to finally begin season

Like many teams on the Hi-Line, the Havre High track and field teams have seen their season get delayed by wintry weather. However, the Blue Ponies will finally compete this spring when they head to Glendive today to compete in the Wibaux Invitational. After so many delays, HHS head coach Kari Filius is happy to see the Ponies out there this spring.

"We just need a competition to see where we are, so I just hope everybody can perform as well as they can," Filius said. "We just need a starting point just to see where we're at, what we need to do, where to go from here and just to get everybody out and get some competition."

The Ponies will compete in the Wibaux Invitational because Thursday's Fergus Invite in Lewistown was canceled. Thankfully for the Ponies, they found themselves a spot in the Wibaux Invitational so they could finally start their season.

At this meet, the Ponies will compete with other Class A schools Glendive and Sidney. However, the majority of the competition will consist of Class B and C schools such as Baker, Circle, Froid-Medicine, Glasgow, Poplar, Scobey and Wolf Point.

Several Ponies will be looking to get off to strong starts this season. In the sprints, Brayden Kimberling, Brisbin Reiter, Carson Harris and Trayden Riley will look to get off to a strong start. The girls team also has several sprinters such as Kaydance Reiter, Macy Brandon, Ela Harbor, Amaya Jarvis and Sierra Parker, so Filius looks forward to those events this weekend.

"I'm pretty excited to see our sprints, boys and girls," Filius said. "We're pretty deep in those areas so I'd like to see where we are there."

Filius also looks forward to seeing what distance runners such as Caleb Tomac and Brody Henry can do at this meet. However, she envisions some difficulty for her athletes in the jumps this week. With snow on the ground for the past few months, athletes such as Kyanna Jarvis and Macy May have not been able to practice in the pits so far this spring.

But now that the weather is heating up, the Ponies should not have much trouble getting out there and competing for the rest of the spring. As the Ponies finally get out there, Filius looks forward to seeing what she has in her team this year.

"We have big numbers this year, and the kids are pretty excited so to finally get a meet for them, I'm excited," Filius said. "Practice gets old after a while so I'm excited to see them compete against other teams and have fun and see where they are."
