Havre tennis continues season with Conrad Meet

After a solid start to the season, the Havre High tennis teams had another strong performance as they competed in the Conrad Meet Saturday. As the Blue Ponies continue to get into a rhythm to start the season, HHS head coach Jeff Miller has liked what he has seen so far.

“I thought everyone played really well,” Miller said. “I’ve seen a lot of improvement from just the previous week in Cut Bank. A lot of steps forward. I thought everyone played really great.”

Over the course of the day, several Ponies had strong showings. In boys singles, Carter Spangler won all three of his matches. In his two matches against Cut Bank, Spangler won 6-1 and 5-5 (7-4). In his match against Kaleb Sawyer from Choteau/Simms, Spangler won 6-1.

Reid Kato also played well in singles. He defeated Cut Bank’s Jackson Black, 5-5 (7-1) and then he defeated Choteau/Simms’ Casey Gorance 6-3. Callen Stoner also played well as he won both his matches in singles. Mason Kinsella went 1-1 in singles at the meet.

In boys doubles, the duo of Conner McKay and Gavin Hall went 2-0. Against Cut Bank’s Damien Burke and Peyton St. Goddard, McKay and Hall won 6-3. Then against Jacob Beatte and Maddox Hofstad of Choteau/Simms, McKay and Hall won 6-3.

The other doubles teams for Havre won their matches

against Cut Bank. The duo of Max Spangler and Jackson Headdress won their match 6-0. Daniel Tilleman and Ronin Olsen then won their match 6-1.

In girls singles, Rayna Johnson won all three of her matches for the Ponies. Against Cut Bank, she won, 6-1, against Stella Overstreet and then she won, 6-1, in another match. Against Ella Peach from Choteau/Simms, Johnson won 5-5 (7-4).

In girls doubles, the duo of Alera Chandler and Heather Herring went 2-0 in their matches. They won, 6-1, against the Cut Bank doubles team. They then won, 6-1, in their match against Choteau/Simms. The doubles team of Courtney Burchard and Cat Kaftan went 1-1 in their matches at the meet. The team of Kylie Greenwood and Lindsey Leinwand also went 1-1 this past weekend.

With two meets now in the books, Miller now has a better idea of where his players are at early in the season. As the Ponies move forward into the spring, Miller believes this early-season meets will be valuable in regards to their development.

“(We’ll take away) the match experience. We’ve been so limited this year, it’s always good to just get outside to play real matches,” Miller said. “Just getting that one more week of match experience and just moving forward, that’s the best takeaway.”

The HHS tennis teams will next compete in a dual against Glendive at home this Friday.
