From the Hill - Great weekend for Bear Paw Ski Bowl

From Byron Ophus

What a weekend!

Looking from the top of the hill on Saturday, clouds or fog hung in the low areas in every direction. But the hill and the areas immediately surrounding the hill were an oasis of sunshine. The cool temperatures in the morning quickly gave way to warm, windless comfort.

Sunday morning seemed to portend a repeat of Saturday's weather. Partway through the day, however, the clouds pushed their way over the hill and a cool breeze chilled the skiers and shredders. A few snowflakes could be seen. The clouds, breeze, and snowflakes were fortunately short-lived and sunshine returned.

The best thing to say about the snow conditions is that there was something for everyone. At various locations on the hill one could find packed powder, corn, or snow that was neither icy nor soft but somewhere in between. The face was like a minefield of ruts and crud and crunchy crust. Wise skiers and shredders avoided the face.

The highlight of the weekend occurred off the slopes as Bear Paw hosted the Hi-Line Winter Brew Fest. Beer and music lovers packed the Bigger Better Barn. They enjoyed the music of Voodoo Cadillac and craft brews from around the state. Many Brewers, some from as far away as Three Forks and Scobey, poured a wide variety of brews for thirsty hill supporters. Additional brews were provided by a local distributor. Delicious pulled pork and Hermie Burgers were available for hungry volunteers and supporters. A silent auction, 50-50 drawing and cornhole game all added to the festivities. There is not enough room to thank all the people who made this a possibility but it is most important to thank all those who came out to support the Hill.

Seldom does the ski season extend beyond the month of March, but this year it will. The Hill manager has agreed to extend the policy of Women in Bikinis ski free through at least this next weekend. The North Central Montana junior alpine ski and snowboard races are scheduled for Sunday, April 2. Raccoon the eyes, rack the boards, rack up some runs and rack up some fun and ski knee deep cheap at the steep and deep.
