Despite not being able to practice outside yet, as winter just drags on and on, the Havre High tennis teams began a new year by officially kicking off their season Saturday in Cut Bank.
The Blue Pony tennis teams, under first-year head coach Jeff Miller, began the new year with an indoor, modified Cut Bank Invitational Saturday, as the host Wolves have mats that go over the gym floor, which creates a pair of indoor tennis courts.
The setup allowed Havre, Cut Bank and Conrad to get their season underway despite the horrible weather outside.
And the Blue Ponies were highly successful in their season debut.
On the boys side, Carter Spangler, Callen Stoner, Mason Kinsella and Carter Chagnon all went undefeated. In doubles, Tre Gary and Reid Kato and Gavin Hall and Max Spangler each won one match in doubles.
Havre’s girls got a 2-0 in doubles from Courtney Burchard and Cat Kaftan, while senior Rayna Johnson went 1-1 in singles.
“Everyone played really great,” Miller said. “The returning players really had no rust or anything like that. They all hit really well and played really well. Our new kids, a lot of them didn’t have any match experience at all and they did great. They took what we taught them the first couple weeks and put it into the match environment and did really well.”
“It was good to just get out there. It’ll show us a few things that we could work on at practice, and it’s been really hard the first couple of weeks being in the gym and not actually being able to go outside and play,” Miller said. “Now actually getting out and playing against opponents, it’ll really show us what we need to work on in practice over the next couple of weeks and just try to get ready for the rest of the season.”
Havre will head west again this weekend, hopefully playing outdoors at the Conrad Invitational.
