From the Hill - A good year for skiing in the Bear Paws

from Byron Ophus

This was the 11th weekend that Bear Paw has been opened this year. Last year the Hill was opened for three or four weekends. There is some argument about the total weekends last year, but needless to say this has been a far better year. Wouldn’t it be nice if the snowfall came consistently year after year, but that’s not the way Mother Nature works. Bear Paw enthusiasts know that a year like this must be appreciated.

When volunteers have to dig snow from the deck, the ramps, Ice Station Zebra, and around the ticket booth, it’s a good bet there’s going to be good conditions. Such was the case Saturday as another 6 to 8 inches graced the slopes of Bear Paw. Powder was abundant on the face and the bowls were loaded. Fresh powder could be found on almost every run.

Most days during a ski season, the temperature is warmer at the hill than it is in town. This year that has not been the case until Saturday. Leaving town the thermometer still had a minus sign in front of the number. The temperature was at least 30 degree warmer upon arriving at the hill. The sky was blue the sun bright and warm. A light breeze greeted chairlift riders as they passed the tree line. The breeze was refreshing against the warmth of the sun.

No new snow arrived for Sunday but none was needed. The snow in the bowls became a beautiful packed powder. The snow on the face was softened by the warm sun and had a texture somewhere between mashed potatoes and corn. The groomed runs were enjoyed by all. Very late in the day the snow became inconsistent as cooling temperatures stiffened the snow, especially in shaded areas.

It’s hard to imagine that the weather could get better than what the Hill had Saturday, but it was better Sunday. Nary did a cloud fill the sky and only occasionally did a light refreshing breeze touch the exposed skin of skiers and shredders. The temperature stayed slightly above the freezing point throughout the day.

Youngsters filled the slopes both days. Seeing their development and joy is the payoff for all the time and effort expended by the volunteers of Bear Paw.

Reminder: the Hi-Line Winter Brew Fest will be Saturday, March 25 from 4-9 p.m. at the Bigger Better Barn. No need to raccoon the eyes or rack the boards, just rack up some fun and support the Hill. Ski Bear Paw.
