A storm that rampaged across the state dumped a significant amount of snow in this part of Montana, snow likely to stay on the ground, with cool temperatures predicted this week and a bit more snow in the forecast.
In Havre, National Weather Service reports the storm left nearly 7.2 inches of new snow, with a near-record 5.2 inches Friday. The record for Havre March 10 was set in 1921 at 5.6 inches.
Temperatures were cold, with Thursday's high for Havre 17 and the low was 1 degree, while Saturday saw a high of 22 and a low of 4.
Sunday dropped to extremely unseasonably low temperatures, with Havre's high 17 and its low minus 9.
The forecast for today as of Monday afternoon - the latest available when this article had to be filed, - predicted warmer temperatures today, with highs in the upper 30s and even 40s and lows in the 20s.
Those are near the normals for this time of year, with the normal high for Havre March 12 of 42 degrees and the low at 18.
But cooler weather was expected to return this week, with he highs through the weekend expected to be in the 20s and lows in single digits.
Some snow also is expected to again fall starting tonight, with up to 1 to 2 inches of snow possible in the plains Wednesday and up to 3 more inches of new snow in the Bear Paw Mountains.
The snow is expected to taper off Wednesday night with no more in the forecast through Sunday, as of Monday afternoon.
The snowfall this winter has helped with the precipitation level.
In Havre, the snowfall moisture has brought the level to above normal, with Havre receiving 1.11 inches of precipitation as of Sunday, with the normal value .97 inches.
And the excess is even more for the water year, measured from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. For that period this year, Havre has 4.65 inches as of Sunday with the normal value 2.61 inches.
And the region has far more than its normal snowfall.
In Havre, which saw possibly a new record for December with 32.7 inches of new snow, more than four times the normal amount of 7.9 inches for the month, the city has seen 60.1 inches of snow since July 1. almost double the normal amount of 34.9 inches.
