Box Elder, Big Sandy keep rolling at Northern C

On Thursday at the Great Falls Four Seasons Arena, three boys basketball teams from the Hi-Line and the District 9C competed in the Northern C Divisional Boys Basketball Tournament. With a spot in the semifinal on the line, some 9C teams played well while others faltered.

The District 9C champions Box Elder Bears started the tournament Thursday afternoon with an 84-45 win over Cascade. The Bears and Badgers went back and forth early in the first quarter. But after an early 5-5 tie, the Bears took control with a 16-4 run. Many players scored for the Bears with Tracen Jilot and Matthias Blackbird each scoring six points during this stretch.

The Bears took a 23-12 lead into the second quarter. Looking to get back in the game, the Badgers went on an 11-4 run to cut Box Elder's lead to 27-23 halfway through the second. Tyler Lane got on a roll with four points during this stretch.

But the Bears dominated the rest of the half with a 16-2 run. It was a team effort during this run, but Dreydon Anderson led the way with five points. With the big run, Box Elder took a 43-25 lead into halftime.

The Bears continued to play well as they pulled away in the second half for the victory. The Bears finished the game shooting 49.3 percent from the field. Jilot led the Bears with 21 points on 8-for-18 shooting and Anderson scored 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 shooting from the 3-point line.

The Badgers finished the game shooting 44.2 percent from the field. Lane, James Lewis and Brent Ethridge each scored 11 points for Cascade in the loss.

On Thursday night, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks suffered a 67-39 loss to Roy-Winifred. The Hawks fell behind early as the Outlaws raced out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter. The Hawks were able to end the first with a 3-pointer from Blake Harmon to cut their deficit to 18-9. But the Outlaws started the second quarter on a 5-0 run to push their lead to 23-9.

Over the next few minutes, the Outlaws and Hawks went back and forth until the Outlaws had a 32-18 lead late in the half. The Hawks got on a 6-3 run to cut their deficit to 35-24 heading into the halftime break.

After the Outlaws scored to start the third, Karson Pulst knocked down a three to bring the Hawks within 10 points. However, the Outlaws put the game out of reach with an 18-0 run to push their lead to 55-27. With the big lead, the Outlaws coasted to victory in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks finished the game shooting 27.8 percent from the field. Harmon led CJI with 14 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Roy-Winifred shot 42.4 percent from the field and was led by Ethan Carlstrom with 28 points on 10-for-21 shooting.

The Big Sandy Pioneers wrapped up the night with a 71-59 win over the then-undefeated Heart Butte Warriors. It was back and forth throughout most of the night. After an early 4-4 tie, Lane Demontiney knocked down a three to give the Pioneers the lead. But the Warriors responded with a 9-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Lance Morgan made a three and a layup to lead the Warriors.

Over the rest of the first, the Pioneers and Warriors exchanged scores. The Warriors had a 22-15 lead to start the second, but the Pioneers clawed their way back into the game. Late in the half, Wylee Snapp made a layup to the game 33-33.

After Cobyn Eagle Speaker scored to give Heart Butte the lead again, Kody Strutz scored to tie the game again. Over the last 30 seconds of the half, a free throw and a three gave the Warriors a 39-35 lead heading into halftime.

After the Warriors pushed their lead to 43-35 to start the third, the Pioneers got on a roll to take control. Baskets from Isaac Pedraza, Cooper Taylor and Cline cut the deficit to 43-41. After a Cline free throw and a pair of Heart Butte free throws, buckets from Cline and Wylee Snapp gave Big Sandy a 46-45 lead.

The Pioneers and Warriors exchanged buckets to end the third. After another exchange of scores resulting in a 50-49 lead for Big Sandy to start the fourth, Demontiney and Strutz knocked down some free throws to push the lead to 54-49.

Over the rest of the fourth, the Pioneers kept piling it on to pull away for the win. They finished the game shooting 39.3 percent from the field. Cline led the way with 24 points on 7-for-20 shooting while Demontiney added 13 points. Heart Butte shot 35.7 percent from the field and was led by Thomas Young Running Crane with 17 points.

The Northern C Divisional Boys Basketball Tournament will continue with more games today at the Great Falls Four Seasons Arena. CJI will play Heart Butte in a loser-out game today at 12:30 p.m. Box Elder will play Belt in a semifinal game tonight at 7 p.m. and Big Sandy will play Roy-Winifred in a semifinal game tonight at 8:30 p.m.
