On Friday night at Havre High Gymnasium, four teams battled it out in the semifinals of the District 9C Boys Basketball Tournament. In the first game, the Box Elder Bears survived in a 64-62 win over the Fort Benton Longhorns. Later in the night, the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks pulled out a 60-53 win over the Big Sandy Pioneers to advance to the 9C championship game.
In the Fort Benton-Box Elder game, the Longhorns and Bears battled it out from the jump. By the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns had a 16-14 lead over the Bears. It remained a battle through the second quarter with the Longhorns taking a 35-33 lead into halftime.
The Longhorns and Bears exchanged scores through the third quarter. Thanks to a bucket from Tuarie Stiffarm-Rosette, the Bears took a 52-51 lead into the fourth. The Longhorns battled back and tied the game, 62-62, late in the fourth quarter. But Matthias Blackbird made a layup in the closing moments of the game to give Box Elder the win to advance to the championship game.
As a team, the Bears shot 30 percent from the field and 90 percent from the free-throw line. Tracen Jilot led Box Elder with 20 points as he went 4-for-24 from the field and 11-for-12 from the charity stripe. Blackbird added 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 shooting from the free-throw line.
Fort Benton shot 45.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line. Landis Arganbright led Fort Benton with 21 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field.
With their loss, the Longhorns will have to play in a loser-out game against North Star at HHS Gymnasium on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The Bears now advance to the 9C championship game on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. where they will play the CJI Hawks.
In their win on Friday night, the CJI Hawks started strong as they took a 14-10 lead in the first quarter. They continued to play well defensively in the second quarter as they took a 28-22 lead into halftime.
But the Pioneers came right back at them in the third to take a 39-38 lead. The Hawks were able to bounce back in the fourth quarter as they went on to win the game and advance to the District 9C championship game for the second year in a row.
The Hawks shot 46.2 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line. Blake Harmon led CJI with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and Nate Nelson and Braden Mattson combined for 26 points.
The Pioneers shot 27.6 percent from the field and 68.2 percent from the free-throw line. Kody Strutz recorded 20 points for the Pioneers on 8-for-18 shooting and Braydon Cline scored 13 points for the Pioneers.
The Big Sandy Pioneers will have to play Turner in a loser-out game on Saturday at 11 a.m. CJI will get to face Box Elder in the District 9C championship game at HHS Gymnasium on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
