In quick time, Reinhard Bold has made himself a strong wrestler for the Blue Ponies
The Havre High wrestling teams are heading to the Class A State tournament in Billings this weekend to compete for a state trophy. One of the Blue Ponies going to the tournament this weekend is junior Reinhard Bold, who is excited to see how he does against the best wrestlers in the state.
"(I look forward to) putting myself out there," Bold said. "There's a lot of good kids in my bracket but I'm excited to see how I'll perform. I look forward to maybe making the finals and having a rematch of divisionals."
Bold's journey to this weekend's tournament began in kindergarten when he first started wrestling. Bold came from a wrestling family, so watching them growing up made it easy for him to fall in love with the sport as well.
"I'm always looking up to them and seeing what they're doing so I'm just trying to live up to the name," Bold said.
But Bold faced adversity his freshman year of high school when the COVID-19 pandemic affected the high school wrestling season. He still got to compete in the winter of 2021, but he did not get to compete in as many large tournaments as he would have during a normal season. To have it happen during just his freshman year was especially challenging.
But a highlight for Bold came last season when he transferred from Big Sandy to Havre and started wrestling for the Ponies. While joining a new program can be scary, the Havre wrestling community made him feel welcomed.
"My favorite memory is last year when I first came to Havre," Bold said. "Just how well Havre treated me in the program and how accepting they were is my favorite memory."
Bold has had success over these past few seasons with the Ponies. Last year as a sophomore in the 145-pound weight class, Bold finished fifth in the state tournament. Just last weekend, Bold finished second at 152 pounds at the Eastern A Divisional to qualify for the state tournament.
"I credit my family for always giving me the best opportunities," Bold said about his success. "I give a lot of credit to my family for being able to help me out and also to coaches like Beau LaSalle for always being positive and giving me the best advice."
Bold will look to wrestle well again this weekend when he competes at the Class A State Tournament at the Metra in Billings. Before he heads off, the Havre Daily News asked Bold five questions.
HDN: What do you enjoy the most about wrestling?
Bold: "I like being out there competing. It's just you and the other guy. A lot of times, you don't have to depend on other people. It's just you and the other guy out there. It's all your hard work that you put into it and you get to see how you perform."
HDN: What was it like transferring schools?
Bold: "Moving up from Big Sandy to Havre was a big adjustment. The class size jumped exponentially. A bigger number of kids, a lot more classes here in Havre and just the overall persona of the classroom and school in general is just a lot bigger."
HDN: How do you motivate yourself on the mats?
Bold: "Even if it's one of the best kids out there, I tell myself to just put on a show. Just to go out there and try my best. Be energetic, light on my feet and just try to give the crowd a good little show. You got six minutes to just give it your all."
HDN: What would you like to get better at as a wrestler?
Bold: "I'd like to maybe expand my confidence when I go out there and just understand that even though I might be lacking some more skills, I can make that up in heart or just overall drive in the match. Maybe a little bit better conditioning but other than that I'm feeling good."
HDN: When your high school career is over, what do you want to be remembered for?
Bold: "Just to be that kid that goes out there, gives it his all and comes back and is just a good teammate. Always putting all the time I can in the weight room and in the wrestling room."
