Havre Trails holding snowshoe event

Havre Daily News staff

With warm weather and snow on the ground, Havre Trails members are going snowshoeing Sunday at 11 a.m. on Eagle Creek in Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation and the public is invited to join them.

Organizers have asked that people bring their snowshoe gear, wear comfortable shoes, and dress in warm layers. The trek will start out from Bear Paw Ski Bowl parking lot and people will hike for about 1 1/2 hours on a 2-mile roundtrip, mostly on level terrain with a short climb at the end.

Rocky Boy group hike events are approved by the Chippewa Cree Tribal Council/Natural Resources Department, who has generously granted Havre Trails a group use permit, organizers said. People may snowshoe with Havre Trails under this permit, but individuals who want to return to snowshoe or hike on their own on reservation land and are not enrolled tribal members must purchase a recreation permit by calling Lucilla at 406-395-4207.

The area is absolutely gorgeous, organizers said, and snowshoers will get great views of the surrounding mountains on this trail.

Anyone who would like to carpool to the ski bowl, should meet at the HRDC building parking lot at 10:15 a.m. A four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended for people opting to drive out.
