Northern wrestling performs well at Tyler Plummer Classic

Another successful tournament is in the books for the Montana State University-Northern Lights wrestling team, as they placed 10 grapplers at last Saturday’s Tyler Plummer Classic in Dickinson, North Dakota.

Head coach Tyson Thivierge rested some of Northern’s top grapplers on the weekend, as MSU-N begins to really gear up for the postseason. However, a full Northern lineup did really well against the likes of rival Providence, host Dickinson State, as well as stalwarts like Jamestown, the University of Mary and many NCAA DII programs.

Northern advanced four wrestlers to the finals, with Devin Crawford winning the 165-pound championship. Crawford beat Tate Norby of DSU in overtime for the title. Brennon McDermott (133) Colin Silverthorn (141) and Austin Vanek (187) all took second for the Lights in their respective weight classes.

Also placing for MSU-N in Dickinson was, Leo Anderson, who finished sixth at 125 pounds, Tanner Cook, who took fifth at 125, Gavin McLean, who placed fourth at 157, Zach Valdez, who finished fifth at 165, Cade Gubler, who took fourth at 174 and Rylin Burns, who placed third at 174.

The tournament in Dickinson was Northern’s last before the postseason. MSU-N has three Cascade Conference duals remaining, and will wrestle for the final time at home this weekend.

Northern hosts Arizona Christian and Embry-Riddle Friday night at the Armory Gymnasium, with all of the action starting at 5 p.m. The Lights then finish the regular season with their rematch against Providence next Thursday in Billings.
