Havre wrestling takes third at the Malta Invitational

This past weekend, the Havre High wrestling team finished up its regular season with the Malta Invitational. While several Blue Ponies did not wrestle, six of the eight wrestlers who did compete placed and Havre finished third in the tournament.

"Overall, it was a good weekend," HHS head coach Beau LaSalle said. "It was a good way to end the season and kind of solidify what we got for our extras going into divisionals this week so we're happy with the performance."

Many Ponies wrestled well in their final action of the regular season. Wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, Teegan Solomon finished first for the Ponies. In the semifinal, Solomon pinned Dakota Campbell from Billings Central in the first period. Then in the first-place match, Solomon pinned Kade Smith from Shepherd.

Colter Solomon also had a good weekend as he took first at 126 pounds. In the semifinal, Colter pinned Jake Niles from Shepherd. In the championship match, Colter won a 3-2 decision against Gauge Chapman from Chinook.

In the heavyweight bracket, Tommy Lewis also took home first place for the Ponies. In the semifinal, Lewis pinned Morgan Fast from Glasgow in the third period. In the championship match, Lewis pinned Kirkallen Hoskins from Billings Central.

At 160 pounds, Landen Caplette took fourth for the Ponies. He started the tournament winning by injury default against Conner Lohman from Choteau. In a pair of consolation matches, Caplette pinned Charles Messerly from Harlem and Tayvon Rodell from Shepherd. In the consolation semifinal, Caplette won in sudden victory against Colton Honey from Malta/Whitewater.

At 205 pounds, both Mason Wilting and Brandon Healy finished fourth for the Ponies. In some consolation matches, Healy won an 8-2 decision over Sam Cox from Big Sandy and he won a 5-2 decision over Kiiw Windy Boy from Harlem.

In the semifinal, Wilting pinned Cox in the first period. Then in the consolation semifinal, Wilting pinned Gus Lee from Choteau. In the third-place match, Healy and Wilting both forfeited to share fourth place.

The regular season now comes to an end for the Ponies as they will compete in the Eastern A Divisionals and the Class A State Tournament over the next two weekends. Along with getting to host divisionals at Havre High Gymnasium this weekend, LaSalle and the Ponies look forward to showing what they are capable of this postseason.

"I feel pretty good about where we're at," LaSalle said. "It's always nice to wrestle in your home gym and get to sleep in the comfort of your own home so we're looking forward to that. I think our mindsets are ready and we're just kind of itching to get after it to see where we end up."

The HHS wrestling team will begin the postseason with the Eastern A Divisionals at HHS Gymnasium this Saturday.
