Park Board establishes Beaver Lodge committee

The Hill County Park Board heard an update on activity in the park and set up a committee to discuss design ideas for a new Camp Kiwanis lodge at their monthly meeting Monday evening.

The old Beaver Lodge has seen considerable deterioration over the past few years and the board decided to rehabilitate it last year, though opted to construct a new one when it became clear that rehabilitation was economically infeasible.

Board Chair Jeff Jensen said the committee to discuss the new lodge and what it will look like has eight members including himself and a few other members of the board and Hill County Commission, but they are open to appointing more members if anyone is interested.

Board member Lou Hagener, who is also on the committee, said he thinks they should set up a town hall meeting at some point to gather public opinion, but left it up to the committee as a whole to decide when and where that should take place.

Beaver Creek Park Superintendent Chad Edgar said the committee should meet on the site of the new lodge at some point just to get an idea of the space they're working with and Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson agreed.

At the meeting Edgar also gave an update on recent park activity, saying they've seen a considerable uptick in usage, particularly for ice fishing and some recreational sledding.

He also said the park has been doing quite a bit of plowing, but they've been warmer than Havre so a lot of the snow has gone away on its own.

He said all the cattle are off the park and they made about $74,000 in revenue this past season.

He said he would put together a data sheet with details at some point in the next couple months.

As for his own activities, Edgar said, he's finished construction of the park's new picnic tables, though there are still some old ones that need work, and he's also finished a number of garbage can hangers.

He said they are also working on new signs for the newly numbered and districted campgrounds which will make things clearer for park users as well as things like emergency services.

He said the park started taking reservations Monday of last week and they have 62 so far including 20 at Camp Kiwanis, which is the same as they had last year.

The board also heard from Montana Department of Transportation Havre Division Maintenance Chief Jody Bachini, who presented members with their new Adopt a Highway signs, which will be installed soon.
