Havre wrestling wins Cut Bank Invitational

In their first tournament of 2023, the Havre High wrestling teams competed at the Cut Bank Booster Invitational this past weekend. The Blue Ponies had competed in duals throughout the week, and that appeared to pay off as both the HHS boys and girls teams won their tournaments.

“I think we wrestled well. We had three kids in the championship on the boy’s side and two on the girl’s side,” HHS head coach Beau LaSalle said. “I think it was a good growing weekend where younger kids built some confidence and got some good matches so overall, just happy with the weekend.”

In the boys tournament, Havre took first with 252 total points. Jefferson came in second while Superior took third. The Ponies were able to win the tournament thanks to the performances of several individuals.

Wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, Matt Lemer took first for the Ponies. He started the tournament with a 4-2 decision over Timothy Schmidt from Lincoln County. He then pinned Arlee’s Dean Moran in the first period of the quarterfinal. Lemer then earned a 2-1 decision over Hardin’s Cale Nedens in the semifinals. In the first-place match, Lemer won by fall 5:26 into his match against Conrad’s Blaine VanDyke.

Carson Harris also took home first as he wrestled at 132 pounds. He started the tournament with a 10-3 decision over Malta’s Kohner Shipman and then earned a 9-6 decision over Jesse Reed from Wolf Point. In the quarterfinal, Harris won a 9-3 decision over Josh Lambertson from Lincoln County. He then won, 18-3, for a technical fall over Cooper Mikesell from Jefferson. In the first-place match, Harris pinned Ryan Barns from CMR in the first period.

Reinhard Bold took second wrestling at 145 pounds. He started with a pin against Eli Oakland from Great Falls. He then pinned Grady O’Connor from Arlee and Lucas Kovalsky from Superior in the next few matches. In the semifinal, Bold won, 16-5, for a major decision over Kanon Branch from Cut Bank.

At 126 pounds, Reed Mantle took third for the Ponies. He started the tournament with pins against Kellan Cassidy from Cut Bank and Kristoffer Dyson from Shelby. He then pinned Big Fork’s Zack Flink in the quarterfinal. In a consolation match, Mantle pinned his teammate Colter Solomon. In the third-place match, Mantle pinned Jefferson’s Dayton Brown.

Pierce Caplette took third at 170 pounds. He started the tournament with pins against Trevor Volk from Conrad and Colton Mears from Malta. In a consolation match, Caplette pinned Poplar’s Craig Berg. In the third-place match, Caplette pinned Choteau’s Percy Bechtold.

At 182 pounds, Kale Van Campen took third for the Ponies. He started the tournament with a pin against Dale Relyea from Big Fork. In a consolation match, Van Campen pinned Conrad’s Trysten Robertson. In the third-place match, Van Campen won, 3-1, against Malta’s Camryn Mears.

Tommy Lewis took third at 285 pounds. He started his run with pins against Cut Bank’s Noah Calerich and Hardin’s Ashton Orthman. In a consolation match, Lewis pinned Weston Boggs from Hardin. In the third-place match, Lewis pinned Shelby’s Ryan Simpson.

At 138 pounds, Justin Awtrey placed fourth in his bracket. He started the tournament with an 18-2 victory for a technical fall over Big Sandy’s Wes Cox. He then pinned Aaron Sawyer from Cascade. In some consolation matches, Awtrey pinned CMR’s Ransom Hinojosa and Thompson Falls’ Brock Ryan. In the consolation semifinals, Awtrey pinned Marshall Kunkel from Simms.

At 126 pounds, Solomon took sixth for the Ponies. He started the tournament with a 6-2 decision against Wolf Point’s Kasey Reed. In some consolation matches, Solomon pinned Diego Long from Thompson Falls and Gauge Chapman from Chinook.

Landen Caplette took sixth at 160 pounds. He started the tournament with a quick pin against Valier’s Chance Horn. He then went on a run through the consolation rounds. He first won a 3-0 decision against Malta’s Colton Honey and then pinned Jose Lara from Great Falls. Landen then won a 1-0 decision against his teammate Daniel Edmonds and then a 13-2 major decision over Daniel Velasco from Cascade.

The HHS girls team scored 129 total points to win its tournament. Harlem finished second while Poplar came in third. At 114 pounds, McKenna Caplette took first for the Ponies. Across their three-match run, McKenna pinned Cyla Adams from Harlem, Arionna Gomes from Choteau and Izzy Baker from Harlem.

At 145 pounds, Aubree Erickson took first. She started the tournament with a 7-6 decision against Hardin’s Carmelia Horn. In her last two matches, Erickson pinned Mylah Rider from Harlem and Berlin Larson from Shelby.

Clara Laird took second for the Ponies at 185 pounds. She started the tournament with a 9-1 major decision over her teammate Angelina Caplette and then a fall against Conrad’s Abby Stott. Laird then won a 3-1 decision against Opal Brannon from Lincoln County Laird then wrapped up the tournament with a pin against Veronica Bewick from Thompson Falls.

Aliyah Stiffarm finished second at 235 pounds. In the tournament, she pinned Laysa Bergeron from CMR and Kitalla Wise from CMR.

Maleigha Azure finished third at 126 pounds. She started the tournament with a pin against Malta’s Isabel Hansen and then she won by forfeit. Azure ended the tournament with pins against Shelby’s Neveah Riphenburg and Lincoln County’s Milynn Lucey.

Angelina Caplette took fourth as she wrestled at 185 pounds. In the tournament, she pinned Bewick and Stott.

At 120 pounds, Brooklyn Wilting took fifth for the Ponies. She started the tournament with a pin against Lexi White from Lincoln County She then won a sudden victory against Hailey Unrein from Lincoln County and then pinned Chinook’s Bailey Billmayer.

The tournament wraps up the first week of action for the Ponies in 2023. Now that he has gotten to see where his team is at after the holiday break, LaSalle believes the Ponies are heading where they need to go with about a month left in the season.

“I think we’re on the right track now as far as we’re getting better with each performance and that’s what you like to see,” LaSalle said. “That’s what we push for. It’s just getting better every day and I think this week with all the competition we had, we really showed that we’re getting better every day.”

The HHS wrestling teams will next compete in the Missoula Sentinel Invitational this weekend.
