Resurfacing planned for Highway 223 south of Chester

The Montana Department of Transportation announced and invited the public to comment on a proposal to apply a scrub seal and new pavement markings on about 22 miles of Highway 223, south of Chester.

The project begins approximately south of the Liberty/Chouteau county line and extends north for 22 miles, ending 5 miles south of Chester.

Proposed work includes a scrub seal, new pavement markings, new warning and regulatory signs, and a bridge deck repair and seal over the Marias River bridge. The purpose of the project is to preserve the existing pavement and extend the service life of the existing asphalt.

The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2024, depending on completion of all project development activities and availability of funding. No new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.

An important part of properly planning for future projects is partnering with the community. The Montana Department of Transportation welcomes the public to provide ideas and comments on the proposed project.
