Hi-Line Girls: District 9C play gets off to an exciting start

Conference play began across the Hi-Line as girls basketball really got going last week.

Last Tuesday night saw Fort Benton knock off Big Sandy 57-41 in that District 9C opener. The Longhorns ran out to a 19-8 first quarter lead and outscored the Pioneers 29-21 in the second half to earn their first win of the season. Emerson Giese drained 23 points to lead Fort Benton; Casha Corder and Hailee Wang knocked down 13 points each. Eva Yeadon netted 20 points for Big Sandy, with Jaihaven Baumann scoring eight, and Alex Worrall and Angie Sant each chipping in four.

Tuesday night also saw Hays-Lodge Pole dominate Class B Rocky Boy 51-36 in Hays.

There were also plenty of big games last Friday night around the area.

Defending 9C champion Box Elder beat the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks 73-46. Melyah Oats scored 35 points in the win for the Bears, while Ariel Gopher added 12. The Hawks' Brynn Kammerzell led with 12 points while MaRae Smail (11) and Sydney Hawks (10) also notched double-digits.

Friday night also saw North Star dominate Hays-Lodge Pole 51-17. Laynie Sattoriva scored 20 points. Kaytlyn Domire added 10 and Kiya King seven. Nina Fox led HLP with seven points.

Fort Benton also crushed Turner Friday night, 55-29, as Casha Corder scored 21 points and Emerson Giese added 16. Bridget Reed and Dakota Krass tallied nine points each for the Tornadoes, with Meridian Snider adding seven.

Chinook stayed perfect Friday night with a 60-28 thumping of Big Sandy. The Sugarbeeters turned it on in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 19-2 to remain unbeaten after three games. Hallie Neibauer led four players in double figures with 20 points; Hannah Schoen netted 12, and Bree Swanson and Alexus Seymour hit for 11 points each.

In a District 2B affair last Friday, Malta dominated Harlem 72-27.

In a huge 9C showdown Saturday night, North Star downed Fort Benton 57-35. Laynie Sattoriva paved the way with 23 points and Kaytlyn Domire backed her with 15 in the Knights' triumph over the Longhorns. Kira King added nine for North Star. Emerson Giese scored 11 and Casha Corder 10 for Fort Benton.

In yet another big 9C matchup Saturday, Chinook toppled Box Elder 59-42. In a rematch of last year's 9C chipper, the Beeters ran out to a 20-4 lead. Bree Swanson scored 19 points and Hallie Neibauer added 16 for Chinook.

Saturday night also saw CJI beat Turner 55-36. The Hawks led 19-4 early and never looked back, as Jayla Ramberg scored 18 points and Brynn Kamerzell added 17. Dakota Krass had 18 for the Tornadoes. Big Sandy also beat HLP 56-40.

In Class B action Saturday night, Shelby dominated Rocky Boy, 70-45. Jori Clary had the hot hand with 23 points and Cameron Blevins helped with 15 for the Coyotes, who had 10 players score in their romp over the Stars. Shelby led by a point after one quarter but went on a 21-8 run over the next eight minutes. Kalelee Henderson scored 12, Amiya Four Souls 10 and Jayci Demontiney nine for Rocky Boy.
