Blue Pony wrestling competes at the CMR Holiday Classic

In their final big tournament of 2022, the Havre High wrestling teams competed hard at the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls over the weekend. At the end of the tournament, the HHS boys wrestling team finished 11th while the HHS girls wrestling team took seventh in its tournament.

In the boys tournament, the Blue Ponies scored 112.5 points to finish 11th. On the girls side, the Ponies scored 81.5 points to take seventh in its tournament.

Several Ponies placed over the weekend. Wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, Matthew Lemer took fourth. He started the tournament by winning by fall over Cole Schaub from Billings Skyview. He followed that up with another win by pin over Helena Capital’s Jayden Simmons.

After a loss, Lemer started the consolation bracket with an 11-1 major decision over Conrad’s Blaine VanDyke. Lemer then earned an 11-2 major decision over Logan Barnes from Dillon/Twin Bridges/Sheridan. In the consolation semifinals, Lemer won, 13-4, for a major decision over Fort Benton’s Trevor O’Hara.

Kale Van Campen also placed fourth as he wrestled at 170 pounds over the weekend. He started his weekend with a fall over Daniel Mann from Great Falls. He then started the consolation bracket with a fall over Fort Benton’s Cade Ball. Van Campen followed that up with a 14-2 major decision over Bode Bentley from Billings West.

Van Campen continued his run through consolation with a 5-2 decision over Trevor Tucker of Missoula Sentinel. Van Campen then won by pin over Fairfield’s McCoy Banner. In the consolation semifinals, Van Campen pinned Cole Graham from Helena Capital.

Tristian Stygles finished sixth wrestling at 138 pounds in the tournament. He started his run with a pin against Eli Oakland from Great Falls. Stygles then pinned Boston Lay from Helena Capital. After a loss, Stygles started consolation with a pin against Colstrip’s Ty Borge. Stygles then won, 14-6, for a major decision over Columbia Falls’ Chris Rathjen.

Reinhard Bold also finished sixth as he wrestled at 145 pounds. He started the weekend with a pin against Taylin Johannsen from Malta/Whitewater. He then pinned Teancum Palmer from Great Falls. Bold then won, 17-2, for a technical fall over Billings Skyview’s Brandyn Azure.

After a loss, Bold won some consolation matches to place. He first won, 5-3, for a decision over Kyle Ard from Billings Senior. Bold then won, 9-0, for a major decision against Glasgow’s William Kirkland.

At 132 pounds, Carson Harris finished eighth in his bracket. He started the tournament with a 12-3 major decision over Belgrade’s Jacob Hahner. He then pinned Mike Richard from Jefferson. In the consolation bracket, Harris won, 8-4, over Big Sandy’s Wes Cox.

Several wrestlers on the HHS girls wrestling team also placed over the weekend. At 185 pounds, Clara Laird took fourth for the Ponies. She started her run with a pin against Lillian Hamner from Billings Senior. She then pinned Hannah Monroe from Valier in the quarterfinal. In a consolation match, Laird pinned Torie Jamieson from Billings Senior.

Wrestling at 235 pounds, Aliyah Stiffarm took fifth at the tournament. In the first match of the tournament, Stiffarm pinned Evy Mackey from Billings West. In the quarterfinal, Stiffarm pinned Seanna Dube from Glacier. After a loss, Stiffarm pinned Cut Bank’s Haylee Fetters in the fifth-place match.

At 114 pounds, McKenna Caplette finished eighth thanks to a run in the consolation bracket. She started her run with a pin against Glacier’s Lahna Thorn. She then pinned Shelby’s Ellie Munson. She continued her run with a 17-0 technical fall over Big Sandy’s Leah LePinnet. Caplette capped off her run with a pin against Poplar’s Kacie Colgan.

Maleigha Azure finished eighth wrestling at 126 pounds. She started the weekend with a pin against Gallatin’s Ashlyn Cataldo. She then pinned Missoula Hellgate’s Liz Gray. Azure won again with an 8-4 decision against Ronan’s Juliette Cheff. After a loss, Azure pinned Peyton Walker from Flathead in a consolation match.

The HHS wrestling teams will now wrap up 2022 with the Sidney Quad this Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
