Havre High School speech and debate took a mix of veteran competitors and new speakers to the Billings Central Catholic High School tournament hosted at Lockwood High School Saturday, with a good return from both groups.
“This was an excellent showing by our competitors,” head coach Tim Leeds said. “This was a massive tournament, and all of our speakers had good rounds, with four finishes in the top eight.”
The tournament saw students from nine Class A schools including Havre, nine Class B schools and three C schools competing.
Second-year public forum debaters Caitlyn “Corby” Ehrin, a senior, and Carinna Kline, a junior, won their first two rounds before losing to a Laurel team second round. Their 2-1 finish and high speaker points broke them into the finals round for a rematch against that Laurel team.
Ehry and Kline lost a close debate in finals to finish second in that event.
First-year public forum debaters Paige Anderson and Lyvia Little, both freshmen debating at their first tournament together, went 1-2 to finish sixth out of the eight public forum teams at the tournament.
Second-year impromptu speaker Sienna Dennis, a sophomore, got good scores in preliminaries at her second tournament of the season to break into the finals round and ended in sixth place out of 13 competitors in the event.
Junior Ethan Stimson, who competed at one tournament last year and was at his first this year tournament at Lockwood, also got good scores in his preliminaries and broke into finals to end up taking eighth out of 21 competitors.
Lincoln-Douglas debaters Paige Bertelson, a senior in her fourth year of competition, and Sterling Shelton, a senior competing for Havre for the second year, did not make the top eight, but went 1-2 with high speaker points to almost make the cut. Bertelsen took ninth out of 17 debaters and Shelton took 10th.
In dramatic oral interpretation of literature, senior Sophia Dawson, competing in her second year for Havre, and Trinity Olsen, a junior competing at her first tournament, got good scores in some preliminary rounds in the highly competitive event with 16 speakers competing, but did not make the top eight. placing 10th and 13th respectively.
Havre is next scheduled to compete at Chester-Joplin-Inverness High School Saturday.
