Crash shuts down US 87 Saturday

A four-car pileup south of Box Elder sent three people to the hospital and shut down U.S. Highway 87 for more than an hour Saturday.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Matt Erickson said the crash, which was reported at 11:56 a.m. Saturday, was due to high levels of dust due to high winds causing low visibility.

He said at least three injured people were transported to a Great Falls hospital.

The names and conditions of the injured people were not available.

Erickson said neither speed nor alcohol were known contributing factors in the crash, just lack of visibility and high winds.

He said the highway was shut down between an hour and a hour-and-a-half.
